Great article, but in this country and everywhere except North America, the game in question is called FOOTBALL and not soccer. Is our media so enthralled with americanization that it has forgotten the basics?

Tis a bit too early to call the futbol the new passion of india. all the 4 semi-finalists nations are europeans and each of the nations have a premier league teams which can beat any of the top 16 teams on any given day. Indians can be viewers without any context, just like one views indy500 in india. how can nation with no roads cheer cars going @ 200 miles per hour.
on the other hand, cricket has a long time tradition and deep domestic involvement.. If we lose that, I think we should hang out heads in shame

For media person,the flavour of flattery is palatable,so should also be constructive critisism, if it is in good purpose of evaluation of viewer,it will be pickles in the meals. Bhupender,this response to your blog also,I expect you will not post. But as you delete it you are reading it.Thats enough for me. Because I expect the anchors to learn and improve their performance as otherwise they will be redundent.As to Football it is always a favourite,whether you in media hype it or not.Cricket is visible because of richmans play but cricket is more in bylanes of towns and villages. If the channel needs viewership not only of metros but also of urban, semi urban and taluk level viewers as they have also now tremendous buying power thanks to cable service at the village level,media has to cover it. Otherwise sports channels do it for them,and it is lapped up compared to repetetive news breakings of news channels.?

Bhupendra Choubey is syptomatic of all that is wrong with television journalism. They never understand the depth of any issue, make a lot of noise about nothing (or get two people to fight on any trivial issue) and always worried about the commercial impact and/or the TRP's.
His programme on this topic was a BIG disaster. He was arguing the merits of packaging/marketing the world cup .. yeah dude, like the world cup needs a lot of packaging. and funnily enought he started probing people's knowledge on football in a sort of elitist attitude towards the fans. - "mm.. you watch the game, but you never understand it, yeah!" fashion. except for one guy almost everyone had a decent grasp on the game. and then the merits of placing ads for cricket vs. football. yeah, dude you got it right, we watch the game only for the ADS. we just looooveeeeee them. we cant get over it. And why the hell did he bring in Shibani Kashyap? So in his style if i were to say it, "Bhupendra choubey just doesnt get it. its the world cup for heaven sake.. end of story".

Soccer can not replace cricket in our countary as it is a genuine sport associated with transparency,hard work,efficiency and MANDATORY team spirit-all traits alien to this land. Earlier it was Dara Singh brand of free style wrestling and now cricket that is popular coz Indians get excited about fake and fixed bouts facilitatring betting, endless banter and absenteism from work place during working hours.Soccer would show us Indians the mirror we would like to avoid.ARE YOU LISTENING Mr KALMADI OR BUSY PLANNING FOR NEXT "SPORTING EVENT" WITH BO;YWOOD BIMBOS?????????

Reading Chaubey's piece, after having watched him on the telly last night, one is sure he has never heard about World Cup football. That's why he talked about "packaging" on TV last night and has written about new age consumerism etc in this piece. What packaging? World Cup football is World Cup football. You don't have to package it to sell. Pepole just love it. You don't package Olympics, do you? Even the woman who sat with Chaubey last night had little clue about World Cup football. This is not a new phenomenon. If Chaubey and the woman had bothered to find out the viewership figures in 2002 they would have found the same enthusiasm; same with 1998 also or for that matter 1994. Of course, people with TV sets have increased; so has the reach of TV. Football is a popular sport in India. The all-India tournaments attract better crows than cricket at the National level. Will football replace the cricket mania? No, it won't, in the longer run. For the moment it has. Because it is World Cup football. It comes once in four years.
