On Saturday, April 2, 2011, a new glorious page got added to the book of Indian history, or I'd rather say, a new book itself was added. The Indian cricket team, led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, won the ICC World Cup, beating Sri Lanka by 6 wickets at Mumbai's Wankhede stadium.
The last ball of the match that Dhoni hit for a six, brought the biggest emotional highs, goosebumps, cheers, shouts, a huge wave of expressions among the countrymen.
While I was at work, there was no stopping me as I jumped, shouted and sat on the floor teary-eyed, as all my colleagues could not hold on and did the same. After all, this victory came after 28 long years. And those in my generation, who had not witnessed the 1983 World Cup glory by Kapil Dev and his men, this win was all we were waiting for.
Even as we worked to give the world the glorious news, the wave of emotions wasn't stopping. Each time a player was shown teary-eyed, we cried too. And when the team carried the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar and Coach Gary Kirsten on their shoulders, the moment indeed made Indians smile and cry with goosebumps of pride.
Each frame post that winning shot by the captain remains a special frame in the heart of Indians. And I am no different. I am still enjoying each one of those frames.
Facebook and Twitter were flooded with the countrymen, expressing the utter sense of pride, thanking the players who wrote the script to a perfect end to India's World Cup journey. Yuvraj Singh, the player of the series was a favorite among them.
While we thank Yuvi and Dhoni, there is another player I want to congratulate, and that is Gautam Gambhir. A man with steel in him, as Harsha Bhogle tweeted, made sure we get that cup, becoming the wall of the Indian innings in the final match.
We may not have realized, but Gauti was the second highest scorer amongst the Indian batsmen in the World Cup tournament, with 393 runs, after Sachin's 482 runs. The guy silently made his contribution to the glorious Indian journey. He is one man, I would want to thank, for the World Cup glory that we Indians are celebrating today.
While gifts galore the Indian cricket team, the IPL is just round the corner. As an Indian fan who is still on a high after the World Cup win, I am not too sure about which team to support in the IPL. Not wanting to do away yet with this joy of India becoming the World Champions, I might as well just end up cheering for India and enjoying all players play even the IPL.
Thanks to Dhoni and his men, who have given us Indians a big enough reason to cheer for, amidst scams and scandals all around. Thank You Indian cricket team! Thank you - MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, S Sreesanth, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel, Piyush Chawla and R Ashwin.
