Priyanka Chopra's mysterious love life
Posted on: 03:16 PM IST Dec 23, 2010 IST
Priyanka Chopra on Karan Johar's show the other day, was a sight all right. She agreed to come on the show with her on-off or is he, is he not? boyfriend Shahid Kapur. And that's all the coup that she was ready to spring us with. When asked about her relationship with the man, she veered between being defensive and beating around the bush so much that it started getting annoying, after a point.
That brings us to the question - Does an actress really need to be coy about her love life in this time and age?
I remember Madhuri Dixit in her heydays telling me that she has not dated anyone ever. And I had come back with my mouth hanging in surprise. 'All these years and she hasn't dated anyone? Impossible', my ever-so-practical friend had pooh-poohed it right away. 'Why not? If Sonali Bendre can say that forget snogging, she hasn't even held hands with any man, why can't Madhuri be date-less?' I had argued...
Well, in retrospect, I don't know if Madhuri and Sonali were fibbing their way through and even if they were, I think it's forgive-able. Considering those days it was a common belief that actresses who were married or attached were not really perceived as 'desirable' by the audience. Also, producers were wary of signing on not-single actresses, lest they ditch their projects mid-way. That was the reason why Juhi Chawla hid her marriage for a very long time. It is another matter that the whole world knew about it and was sniggering, much before she announced it.
Times have changed. Portraying a pristine white image of oneself now seems to serve absolutely no purpose, except maybe come across as a little abnormal. If one's worry is about being hounded by media, look at Kareena Kapoor or Deepika Padukone. Do they really look like they are in trouble? And yes, Kareena's long-standing blissful love status doesn't seem to have even made a dent in her career. Deepika not being coy about her break-ups and hook-ups, comes across as an honest, normal young woman like any of us and nothing is as endearing as honesty. Does being married and preggers make Konkona Sen Sharma any less sexy? Or a Rani Mukherjee playing hide and seek with rumours of her love life more sexy? I don't think so.
Grow up girls. It is the 21st century. You are not expected to be a sex-less, abnormal thing of beauty forever. Be honest and there are better chances of you being accepted.
