B. Pranesh Reservation for outsiders going on in Mumbai and Bangalore should be condemned before criticising Deve Gowda and Raj Thackeray. Had people in charge of recruiting people been fair to locals with merit this situation would not have come to this level. Even for lowest level of jobs which do not require any educational background, people have been brought from outside the state. Educated people going to Germany or France or Japan even for a few months, they learn their language. But in Mumbai and Bangalore, they stay for decades and impose their language on the locals.

preeti Ms Ghose, u seem to be bengali from your name. My own experience is that bengalis are the most parochial of the lot. so first look what you are your state ppl are doing. It looks like the marathis and kannadigas have become the fav. whipping boys of you media ppl. You guys want mumbai and bangalore to be cosmopolitan. But what abt kalkata and madras? you wont speak anything abt that. You see problem only with marathis and kannadigas eh?

more Rajesh Sagarika has analysed the problem well unfortunately she has given unrealistic solution making a mockery of sentiments of maha and karnataka that is giving a statehood to Bangalore and Mumbai.
Sagarika forgot Pune to now equally cosmo..so Pune too would come in her list...Nagpur is hub developments in central India..if any one visit this city this city has people from all over the states..hence Nagpur also comes under New state definition..
So how many state we will make as more and more cities become successful..Sagarika has very less knowledge of Maha and karnataka demographics..Konkan example is a joke..Konkan is one of the rich region in Maha.. Very few could understand Maha except Raj..thats the reason for his popularity...
Sagarika and all north india based journalists never bother to research before making statements on blogs and national shows..All the comments about Maha and Karnataka has hurt the citizens of both states eventually driving them more closer to Raj and Gowda...
any single statement of like Sagarika of creating mumbai n bangalore states by even a single leader could create riots..this shows hows immature Sagarika's assessment is..

Most of the Maha except Vidarbha hardly prefers to migrate for bread n butter..they migrate to cities only for special ambitions..Decades of development in rural Maha has resulted least migration to any where else in the India.. migration has to completely relate to opportunities and not competitiveness...unlike UPand Bihar where they have to migrate for bread n butter that makes them vulnerable they work on whatever wages offered..this in the end impacts locals who demand minimum wages...
I am now working here in Australia..where they have fixed a minimum wages..all those who compare with Maha to west..entire west has takes care of locals by fixing minimum wages and controlling visas..look whats UK is doing..
I can understand high skilled migration..But can Sagarika explain low skilled migration...nos she cant..

Navin Dear Ghose Madam

It is unfair calling Marathi people as Goondas on ur television. Raj Thakare had to take up this way because our govt has failed..And for those who are worrying abt Mumbai,,Kindly have the courage to first develope their own state..Those people have actually sucked the hard earned money of their own statesman. CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME..

sham sundar People like Raj and Gowda are no more than petty politickers...its sad that these people hold sway over their captive & often ill-informed vote banks....I believe that be it...Mumabi...B'lore...Chennai or any other mega city which contains a significant need to be carved out as City states or Union terriotries...

Justification for it can be cultural diffrences between these cities and the hinterland...maintenance of peace in these cities...since these cities are perfect melting pots...they would go a long way in national integration....also considering the fact that these cities have their own culture albeit superficial...we want to be separate...

It won't be long before these hinterland politickers with no stake in these cities development make these cities a flash points...Hope a visionary leader emerges and demerges these cities from their respective states...

Mohammed Khalid Hasan After reading the blog, I cannot imagine the feelings of US,Australian and European Citizens when we Indians grabbed majority of their jobs. If people do not see anything wrong in outsourcing and Indian's aspiration of studying or working or migrating to America/European Country then what is the problem if a person from UP or Bihar or anywhere else likes to migrate to anywhere else within the country? All those who are in IT/ITES sector have stolen the opportunities from the US/European Locals. Shouldn't this be considered an offense???

crisisofid Whenever I read this type of debate and discussion among educated indians I wonder if these people are from same country. No wonder foreigners ruled them for 1500 years. Lets see how long this freedom lasts. My guess is 100 years. I never understood who are these outsiders. Do they really do not contribute anything to economy. If I know geography of this country right then 53% of natural resources come from undivided bihar. I will suggest these outsiders to try and get out of india altogether as I am sure they will not be abused like this anywhere in this world (not even in pakistan).

I think indian are also living in fools paradise... they claim to be super power at one hand and ready to deny the right to live to fellow indian at other. These politician will hate US in public forum and will take first available opportunity to tour foreign country at taxpayer's expense. They claim their state belogn to only people of their state, religion and caste and then they will try to send their children to foreign country. I never understood this paradox.

more swathi.v.s I think that people like raj thackrey and deve gowda are not interested in helping put india on the same pedestal as the reigning economic powers...why else would they fuel such unnecessary regional indifferences repeatedly solidify their image as the "unworthy political buck chasers".

Ady Hi Sagarika,
Thanks for the interesting article; I read your blogs quite often and though I don't necessarily agree with all your points of view, I enjoy the active debate that they bring about from readers. I truly believe that's one of the true responsibilities of a journalist. To make the citizens more aware of their surroundings and make them think of and for their society. I appreciate the fact that you bring up relevant topics for debate.
As for the current topic, I truly believe this is one aspect where Indians can ape the West. If you look at most developed countries like USA, UK, etc. the way they have accepted various cultures and taken in as a part of their own society is commendable. That's what makes major cities like LA, NY, London, etc the melting pot(s) of cultures that they are. We need to be more tolerant of various cultures. In the last couple of decades, whatever development we have made as a country, I truly believe that its been more because of the efforts that we as citizens have taken in spite of the political situation we have in India.
But with regards to reservation and the insider/outsider debate, do you think Marathi youngsters or Kannada youth are any different from the youngsters from UP/Punjab/AP or for that matter any corner of the country? The respect for culture or at most times, the lack of it seems to be the same everywhere. Its only education and upbringing that differentiates responsible citizens from the irresponsible. Land of birth has nothing to do with this!! I have seen examples where NRIs from US or UK tend to value their culture a lot more than people staying in India. Its all up to the individual and generalizing people's interests on the basis of their land of birth/mother tongue is utterly religious!!
But then, when have our politicians acted in the interest of Indian culture or citizens? The skimpy clothing of the Red Skins cheerleaders is more a blot on our culture than the way they treat our own citizens!!
