Ah, the great Indian city! The lack of urban infrastructure destroying the infrastructure of the human soul. By 2020 Mumbai will have a population of 20 million. Bangalore, already with 6.5 million inhabitants has seen phenomenal growth. 300 million Indians... Read The Article
I was not quite convinced with following lines "Bangalore alone contributed 22 per cent of the state income. As economist Vinod Vyasulu puts it, Bangalore is a neighbour of San Jose not of Tumkur. Mumbai dreams that it is neighbour to Manhattan. But now Tumkur is demanding its pound of flesh from Bangalore. And the Konkan belt is demanding its share of the prosperity of Mumbai. The provinces are beating at the doors of the rich metropolis, saying we will break this door if you don't let us in".
What does this mean are these urban cities some independent proviences, does it mean if a state say Karnataka or Andhra is contributing 20% of income to the country does it means the state must be invested back that much amount by central govt,no this has to be invested in all over the country. What about the power, food and water where does it come from,is it from bangalore, who face the power cut most of the times..
Its like saying " the whole tree is not good only the fruits are good "

I hail from UP and now work and live in Bangalore. I have respect for local Kannadigas their language and their culture and i have no problem with them doing what they want, but i speak hindi and like my culture and as a citizen of India or rather as a human being i have full-right to do so, when i do so where do i dis-respect Karnataka or Kannada or somebody's culture. If you see your ancestral history you will get to know everyone has been moving from one place to other for greener pasture, so sometimes you are a local and other time you are outsider.I got myself educated and on merit got myself job in the most promising city in India, so am i not suppose to work in my country? I pay income-tax as well as professional tax, i spend almost all my salary in Bangalore so who is benefiting at the end? I buy grocery from local Kannadiga's shop, i employ local maid-help, so am i not paying back Bangalore or local what it has given me. What are so called champion of regional causes are doing, taking 20-30 unemployed youth and shouting slogans discouraging them to work in a honest way. I don't understand how can somebody snatch your job if you are a better worker and ask a reasonable salary for work. Though i didn't wanted to say this but i have found that locals here extremely lazy and don't want to work, take the case of autowallah's they prefer to sit and read newspaper instead of fetching passengers just because they already earned 50 bucks for next meal. In the era of global economy you have to compete with everyone and show your talent and get things on merit, No reservations going to help you anywhere. Lacs of landlords earning 10-20K Rs per month just by renting their houses to hated IT-BT guys, aren't they getting their benefit out of IT revolution? One needs to rise above tantrums thrown by politicians and give it to them, its by virtue of people who get charged up with their inflammatory statements that their hate-shops running. Lets all help and make new India!

what is funny is, if you go to germany or France, they wont listen to your arguments of benefiting the economy. You will be made to learn German/French although you use English at your work place. That is the difference.

Thas why i don't want to go there and rather stay in my country and contribute to its growing economy and where i have freedom to speak whatever language i want to speak.

All cultures are bound to change. When sudden influx of outsiders try to change the local culture conflicts starts. This results in a fight when outsiders try to treat the local culture as inferior. There is no issue when out siders want to join the local culture. Cultures gets mixed and new cultures emerge.

I do not understand as to why we are making such a noise about this local preferential feelings. Perhaps it assumes greater danger as it is mouthed by a politician who is trying to gain some ground in his own state. As a matter of fact this feelings exists in all regions== I have lived in Andhra, Bengal, Delhi, Mumbai nad bangalore and now in Gujarat.Even if you try to be one among the locals, you are treated different== Bengalis try to spk bengali if two of their kind get together so it is with Malayalis, Telugus and Tamils, gujaratis. You have UP wallas and Biharis trying to gain space wherever they go and try to make fun of locals and other region people but this is not acceptable to marathis, tamils , bengalis because they think the people from UP and Bihar have a long way to go to reach their level. Get to the streets you will find- Delhiites detest People from UP/Bihar, because they think that they are spoiling Delhi; Biharis/assames/Oriyas do not like Bengalis because they are the dominating types: Telugus and kanadigas do not like Tamils for similar reasons; malayalis are not liked anywhere because they are clannish (mistaken for madrasis)nad pushy types. This is happening at ground levels for decades and still we are surviving as a unit- happy living in diversity and JAI HIND

I am not surprised at Ms Ghose's biased views on Raj Thackeray . She is entitled to have her opinions but surely should not mislead her readers by statement like" Raj Thackeray wants noth Indians out of Mumbai". He has never said so .

if we the people keep allowing such statements by these slimy politicians to affect us ;the day is not far when the, now ,rising india will shatter to pieces divided by hatred amongst people not of different religions but different regions. i agree in some expects with many people calling themselves as locals of these places especially mumbai that they r affected by people from other states. but lemme remind them that in todays world of growth and competition if someone is having "ur" job then its cause of ur lacking .(leaving the quota vallahs and politicians kins aside). taking an example(READ THIS CAREFULLY AND SENSIBLY)we have a new IT village set up here in chandigarh.people from all over the country tamilians, bengalis and even marathis& kannads come here for their jobs in the companies...and maybe u r next but should we ask them to learn punjabi ,ask them not perform ganesh chaturti(as its too loud)or nt to eat on banana leaves with hands..no.we are learning to live with them ,enjoy adapting their cultures while keeping our intact...and strenghtning indias integrity. and thts how u will build india ..the nation..otherwise the day is not far when i ll have to apply for visa to visit my best frd's(who happens to be a maharashtrian patil) place in pune . i humbly request the people to not support leaders like raj thakare, hate their ideas and therefore grow more love for united ,integrated INDIA.

I would like to answer to Sohan's remark. The same way you learned Kannada, the taxi drivers and the bihari labourers working in mumbai has learned marati and they work in tandem with the region. This guy Raj Thackerey needs attention and also some votes to get something. He is just a small group. Nip him off the bud. Use the best force of the country, the Military, to arrest him for inducing racism the biggest tumor in our democracy. If state government cannot cope with the pressure, let it have President's rule from a year and make the society better before handing over to timid and coward politicians.

You live in a different world....Go and speak to any bhaiyya or bihari cab driver or rickshaw-walla in Marathi....and he will either act as if he understood nothing or he really has not understood...ofcourse thats not the key issue now..the fact is that maharashtrians donot want anymore low skilled, illiterate migrants who lack the basic civic manners....We have enough of our own ( thats a candid confession )...so please spare us...

Ms. Sagarika Ghose. You seem to have got it all wrong. I speak of Bangalore, Karnataka and Kannadigas. Mr. Deve Gowda might have his own selfish political reasons to announce job reservations for Kannadigas - damn him and all that parochial nonsense that he and other politicians of his ilk stand for. But in you seemed to have deliberately left out the larger picture.
I recall having visited a town called Allentown near Philadelphia, state of Pennsylvania, USA to explore the setting up of a Pharma manufacturing company in that town. We met with the City Council and the town's Mayor who made a presentation of what they could offer us, in terms of incentives (land, water, power etc..)to facilitate setting up of the unit in their town. They then straightaway came to the question - how many of our town's residents would get jobs in the proposed unit. Also that most of the incentives would be operative only if atleast 60% of the jobs went to the local, registered residents.
Honestly we did not find anything wrong with what the Allentown city council's conditions.
In this context please let us know what is wrong in reserving a portion of the jobs for local Kannadigas ? Needless to add - the locals get the jobs only if they are competent and suitably qualified - no arguments on that.
What is happening, atleast in Bangalore, is that a Bengali boss prefers to recruit only Bengalis, a Maharashtrian boss only Maharashtrians, a Tamil boss only Tamilians and so on and so forth - despite equally competent and qualified local Kannadigaas being available. Then even unskilled and semi skilled jobs are being snatched away by non-kanadigaas.
The city of Bangalore is simply sitting on a demographic time-bomb. The worst is yet to come - and I fervently hope this does not happen.

Well said Ashwin...I am great follower of Ibnlive news until some incompetent and immatured journalists like Sagarika Ghosh stepped in. They are forgetting about the state of Chennai/Kolkatta. Atleast these people should do real investigations to know the ground reality of the root cause creating all this before making these statements

India cannot be compared to other countries as it's structure is intricately complex with numerous languages, customs and lineages. The very reason why there is so much of hatred against the use of hindi in certain south-indian states is primarily because of the fact that people do not want things imposed on them. Hindi is primarily spoken in the north-indian belt and imposing it in south-indian states is akin to being subservient to their north-indian masters. So these things should be pondered before blaiming south indians especially tamilians.!
