Ah, the great Indian city! The lack of urban infrastructure destroying the infrastructure of the human soul. By 2020 Mumbai will have a population of 20 million. Bangalore, already with 6.5 million inhabitants has seen phenomenal growth. 300 million Indians... Read The Article
I am a non-kannadiga.. I support Deve Gowda.. Everything should not be accumulated to city of bangalore. It should be distributed in every state.. So skilled resources should be spread accroos india instead everybody come to bangalore and make it a hell.
Let north-indians work in north india.. Keralite work in Kerala. same with Tamil Nadu..
Who said you can do proper IT job only sitting in Bangalore???... IT job is perfectly possible where ever you physically located as long as you connected to internet & other communication channels.

Among the lot of comments this is the most logical one.Software industry is the only industry probably that can be setup anywhere(assuming you have manpower, which in my opinion you have it everywhere in India not just a few cities).Industries like Steel etc have to be setup where all its raw materials can be easily sourced from so it just justifies if one region has a lot more industries than the other but in S/w it is not so.Hopefully this thought distills down the natin/city planners minds and we get to see the region spreading out.It will work to the benefit of everyone. It will put a check to migration, clashes of this sort and most importantly all the infrastructure blues of our cities today. Our nation today has a handful of cities where everyone tries to get into.If we can change our policies and develop atleast 3-4 cities/towns in every state we can tackle a lot of our problems more effectively.

Hi Sagarika Well thought out Article. As you have mentioned that Delhi does not have Regional Chauvinism because it is an independent state. I think it would be a great idea if we convert these large cities like Mumbai and Bangalore into States. Then Politicians would not be able to show regional interests to take political mileage.

Legey Ja.. narod narod!!
Set aside the North-South divide, its quite evident from this conversation that the south itself is fissured. The only time I sense some unity is when we play Pakistan. Else its the same old **** always.
Why blame poor Raj.. or the Gowdas. Other's ain't better anyway. And trust me, the Delhi (Anti-Sikh) riots taught us that there is nothing called your own land.
Mob mentality rules. You are inclined to create mischief when you have tangible support of a group of people with you. The cause is irrelevant and ancilliary. Look at Binge drinking for instance. That cuts across Caste, creed, religion and all such elevated measures of segregating and classifying humans.Or lets consider the violence in Bangalore when Dr. Rajkumar died of natural causes. A fellow Kannadiga policeman was killed.. Does anyone in the state (besides his wronged family) consider that day as his death anniversary??
So a Raj & a Gowda can play all these tunes to the mob and get away with it. This is essentially akin to Binge drinking.
Long live Alcohol

Sagarika, as much I would like to read your opinions as that of Rajdeep's, I find your opinions lack the depth due to incomplete research from your side. I am all for urbanization, having a good infrastructure - road, rail, air, phone, rivers, ports - as much as having a good agricultural growth. Why do people flock to the cities? Because of the lack of facilities in the places other than the so called big cities. All the original metros (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata) and the new ones (Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, etc.) and the emerging ones (Coimbatore, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mysore, etc.) are happening not because of any of these politicians, but despite them. You would know the extent of roadblocks the politicians create just to stop a project (SEZ, Airport expansion, construction of Dam, Sharing of river water, industrialization, urbanization, etc.) either by inciting regional/local passions or by filing false cases in the courts (how can we forget the numerous cases filed by Deve Gowda and company - all of them were dismissed by the courts). Still, why is this "son of the soil" issue coming up everywhere more than ever? Because of fear of losing. The growth should be inclusive. The outsiders should try to mingle with the locals, understand and appreciate the local culture and customs and automatically the locals would be kind to the "outsiders". Remember, as long as the local culture, language, habits and customs are ignored by the "outsiders", this "sons of soil" issue will keep cropping up and I support them. How would you feel if tens of thousands of Americans come over here and try to just boss around and impose their culture and language on everyone here? It is the same here too. Be respectful to the locals and have an inclination to learn and live with them and exchange the rich cultures that we have in India. Every region, religion, language, culture, custom, tradition is rich in their own way.

dear friends, if all of you are trying to discuss about the influence of outsiders in bangalore and losing respect/rcognition for kannada language and culture here..then i would like to suggest a simple solution....the local kannadigas should be blamed for this..they should stop acting like americans...since most of the outsiders belong to IT..and their kannada counterparts are definitely not autodrivers...its IT kannadigas..it them who have to take their culture/languae forward..atlst outside office they can discuss abt langge or culture..and evoke curiosity..for that on should know his culture first...then the blame should be on the parents or the schools they study....so its clear that it has to start from scratch..from the schools and at home..that means children should be taught abt their language and culture instead of waste time on mc donalds and speaking unnecessary english to the kids.....that means a peaceful solution lies in the next next generation....

Mr Ganesh: I am aware of the difference between classical language and classical music...if one silappadikaram can get Tamil classical status, Telugu prabandhas and nannechoda's works equally qualify for getting Telugu tne classical status...I drove home the message on Telugu missing the classical language status when the language has its unmistakable stamp on Carnatic music.

While I agree with most of you but let me tell you about my experience. I am just 24 years old. My mother is from Maharashtra and my dad is from Karnataka. I grew up in the gulf where the majority of indians were from kerala and now I am in United States where majority of the indians here are from A.P. All throughout my life no matter how I tried I could never me accepted by either of the population neither the keralities nor the teluguites. The problem of state based discrimination is much worse and its high time we as indians realize that in the end we are all indians. Though while I worked in bangalore I felt most at home because I didn't feel even a single day that I had to try to fit in.

Never mind that Infosys on its Bangalore campus alone, employs 18000 young Indians from all over India, many from Bihar and UP.
Tell us the source of information. Are you telling truth or lying?

As a non-Kannadiga working in Bangalore, its time I thank people of Karnataka of making my life here. Its also woken me up to learn Kannada. The mindset that knowing English and Hindi ONLY is a passport to live anywhere in India without learning its local language is an incorrect attitude. Early 90s was so peaceful in laid back Bangalore. The real problem started with the Cauvery dispute and insensitivity from people from Hindi speaking belt, especially Delhi. I hope Hindi speaking people will quickly learn Kannada and use it as a lingua-franca on the streets of Bangalore.

The biggest hypocrites in this world are Indians. No one matches them at it. All those Kannadigas screaming the need for "outsiders" to mingle with Kannada culture have a son, daughter or a relative abroad. How many assimilate the "firangi" culture. Everywhere in US I see indians, I see them dying for sambar or parathas, making face at every food item that is not curd rice or ghee laced aloo paratha. These same indians spend nights in nude bars and booze like they have never seen women (true actually) or liquor before. These very souls would be the one's preaching the need of outsiders to adopt kannada or tamil or maharastrian culture on the forums. Disgusting politicians like Raj Thakrey thrive because there are disgusting maharastrians who have the same sick mentality. Not all biharis and UP wala bhaiyas are innocent either. When in a group they behave like animals. In fact all of us have one common reason to be together - uncivilised animalistic behaviour. Truth is India is run by 10% intellectuals and 90% loosers. These 90% loosers have nothing else to do but find fault in each other when truth is all are the same. Difference is only in the language they speak and the so called "culture" that has some stupid differences.
