Good article. The fact that Yechury could say that not a drop of blood was shed in Tianammen Square says it all. Marxism is a dead ideology and its a matter of time before the Left are left red in the face by the people of West Bengal and Kerala.

First of all Marx himself told :" Marxism is a hypothetical context". To click my mouse (read as:to write) about Indian Left, the 1st word I say that their boss ,Mr.Prakash Karat is a headmaster like politician -to whom each&every negotiation table with Congress(read as:UPA allies) is some thing like a meeting with managing comittee of a school, where headmaster's ideology never be compromised at any cost. If you think in a broad sense ,then you easily find out every tricks of Left's double standard. Few days ago, Left party told SP:" Think twice about N deal , don't forget Muslim vote". Infact Is the consideration of Muslim Vote -a issue of India's Independent Foreign Policy. And at last I think if & only if Manmohan Singh gave the brand name of the deal as :"Indo-Global Nuclear deal instead of Indo-US Nuke deal"- then probably it will be easy. And why Not Karat Bardhans don't realise "Without IAEA or even NSG safe guard it's imposible for India to import Nuclear material from Rusia or even France.

I read a very balanced analysis. Mr. Prakash Karat and Mr Bardhan should realise that their real strength is much lower and not mandated enough to decide what is good for the Country just because they are in a position to reduce the Government to a minority.
Their efforts to reach out to other allies of UPA than Congress and make appeals to them is a clear indication that they want the current strength of their hands kept intact until next Lok Sabha Election.
They will have to establish to Indians that they are not pro_china and anti-india if they want to remain anti-america.

Ashutosh-great piece! Except that I feel that the communists today are not relevant enought to merit such coverage. Yes today they are in the news for holding the government hostage over the nuclear deal but come the next elections- they will be relegated to a footnote in Indian elctoral politics and even lose their citadel of West Bengal.

A saying goes that Communists always try to milk a dead cow.
They may be academically too good at political economy yet, our desi comrades are species unmatched world over. But they are not alone to be blamed. In fact,after Nehru we didn't have people of great wisdom to lead our people and evolve into a great society. That job until now was taken over by our emotional creations of bollywood subsequently, passing on that baton to dramatic club of news channels of today! This I say because had the media developed the habit of clearing air about various issues, these politicians would have found it utterly difficult to confuse masses. Certainly, the dramatical politics is surviving on unprofessional media. Thankyou!

Congratulations to you Ashutosh!!!!!! finally a blog on your channel which looks at Indian communism in its true perspective and quite wonderfully written. But its a bit ironial in a sense that one of the best blogs on an English Channel is written by its Hindi channel editor.Being a resident of West Bengal, though currently in London i can tell you that the rural people in West Bengal do not really know clearly as to what communism stands for. But the communist parties have succesfully been able to channelise people's energies to vote for them by feeding the emotional angle of the dislike of the upper class by the lower and middle class. Another thing is that they recruit unemployed people locally in their party from a very young age and brainwash them but in return the youth doesnt get a job offer but the power to execute local hooliganism.The left in West Bengal fears exposure of its rural population to the outside world because if that happens,whatever communism is present in people will have to be done with.

B'cos of their idealogy the growth of economic wealth is reduced and worst still they want a greater share of the cake for their comrades.That in turn puts strain on the resources and spooks the whole system.Eastern European countries will make good case studies of the collapse of the antiquated socialistic patterns of development that were followed.The Chinese have learnt from those catastrophic events and now finds it prudent to have strategic economic ties with there one time foe, the U.S.
