Is Mumbai exclusive to Maharashtrians? This should be a no-brainer, but since Raj Thackeray reignited the debate, it's an issue worth exploring, if only to see what turns up.
The timing first. What pressed the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena... Read The Article
there is need of better understanding .one should understand the rights given by constitution to people and respect the others. whatever Raj Thakre or any one is doing is not for common people, common people want to live and let others live.. The language problem in every state is not new and politician must not take benefit of this conflict. Everyone has right to live anywhere in india and earn. If north Indian are getting job it is becuase they work hard .After all they are developing all the states by hard work. If labors from North India will not work in Gujarat or any state ,70 % industry will shut down . Better be competent and give competition to north Indian on basis of talent and hard work and dont make noise on basis of regionalism.

I am shuddered at this very thought that in India I can not go to other state to earn my livlihood. I have been working in private sector for last ten years & had various stints in the states of Maharashtra,Gujarat, Haryana, MP & Delhi. I am a Maharashtrian & settled in MP for last 8-9 generations. Hence I belong to MP in that sense. But tomorrow if all the people in MP start telling me to go to Maharashtra , I really do not know where to go as none of my paternal relatives are in Maharashtra. My sensibilities , taste & even culture is different from Maharashtra & am hard core central Indian in every bit of sense. Please help in me in finding my identity , as to which state I belong to ? God forbid , if tomorrow every city also start this tirade on the " outsiders " in states !!!

Excellent thats what is expected of people coming to mumbai to have'sensibilities , taste & even culture' as of Maharashtra as you have adopted that of M.P. Are we asking too much of a person who settles here to just be a part of us.Even today we find old parsees or marwari lalas speaking to marathis in their own mixed Marathi Language. But the importance is that even if it is not pure they try to talk the local language and be a part of the local population.Thats what is expected of those people coming currently from'UP/Bihar or anywhere else"...

Well! ABOUT ALL THESE DEBATE . First lets look at the frozen facts of all the incidences that took place and one which cannot be denied.
Fact : 1.Mumbai is stuffed like anything be it anyone. 2.Influx undoubtedly should either be stopped or the administration should come out with a Concrete futuristic plan .but at present it has to stop. 3.There is no denying to the fact that the Samajwadi Party Leaders under the name of Chhat Pooja were trying to make there presence felt in mumbai and were trying to make a hay. Although these act is constitutional, but this is a fact. 4.Making a Demand for hindi to be made official language in Mumbai Corporation is undoubtedly Directly Challenging the Maharashtrians, thus making it a vulnerable issue. 5.The Mumbai Corporation is to be blamed at plenty for the encroachments carried out by anyone -- As it allows to seep in and stay so they shall as the Conditions are. They need to Act immediately. They too are a Body Governed by the Politicians only. Let the administration do its work without interference and we all shall see the results. 6.We have all the Rules of the world but no "WILL" for implementation --- its of no use. 7. Yes ! This too is a fact, that all the maharashtrians have this a major cause of concern in their minds about the immigrants in their Cities. Although their view point on tackling these issue may vary but yes all of them have these concern. 8.The issue could have been dealt in a more political manner so as to call it... The Concerns of the People living there from generations together has also to be thought of . Where are they supposed to go then from mumbai. 9.the UP and Bihari People are hardworking at much lower wages than an average maharashtrian. In Business terms they are more Competitive --- In this whole debate technically and Constitutionally they are on the Right side... but they too Encroach..... 10.Amitabh incidence! although those are the facts but rather unfortunate.

I would say thanks to Mr Raj and the ppls who have the same view as like him. thanks for dividing india based on regionality, relegion, languages.
Its really shamefull tht people like Raj who enjoys a lot of respect from the society, are using this to gain political power. I am glad that i am in australia and i m preety happy to receive racial abuse from aussies time to time atleast its better not to hear the same from an indian brother.
If our freedom fighters wud have thought like this thn we wud have not acheived freedom at all but peoples like Raj are just making joke of our beloved freedom fighters by doing this.
Please work for the unity of india, do not let the world laugh on us.

25000 sikh youths lost their lives for the same cause driving bhayas from punjab. They all perished or died or letft the country without any result. These people were very strong and fought for 10 years. Punjab after division 1947 had 70 percent sikh population and rest 30 percent hindu population. Today it is 50/50 that is increase in 20 percent bhayas population in punjab. Govt of india is very strong and they can send the tanks in the street of mumbai and if they can finish people like bhinderwala then raj means nothing to them. I think people in mumbai had never seen the army tanks in their lifetime. so my advise to local is to avoid any king of trouble, it is not just worth it.

>> The issue really gets tangled when 'outsiders' expect localites to speak in their tongue.
This really is the problem. The arrogance shown mostly by Hindi speakers that others should learn Hindi, the so-called 'official language' [more the language of the illiterate masses in the north] is the reason for most of the linguistic problems in India.

I am continuously observing the issue created by MNS chief Raj Thakery and party in Mumbai. The bottom line is that MNS want to remove North Indian specially Bhaias from Mumbai to make Mumbai safe and create opportunity for Local (Marathi) ppl. I want to remind MNS Chief that forget about ppl moving from one state to Maharashtra, today Terrorists coming from different countries like PAK and Afghanistan to our country. Killing our ppl and creating a violence in our country (Remember Mumbai train blast). I just want to ask Raj Thakery, If terrorist from different countries come to Mumbai and kill innocent ppl then you don't have any problem ? Why your workers not going to Punjab and Jammu Kashmir border to throw out Terrorists from our country ? Does Bhaias (North Indian) creating more problem for Mumbai then terrorists ?

dear this is not the question of marathi & non marathi....this all hype created by our news channel...if you listen carefully what Raj thakre has said..is "gaujarthi and other communities are part of mumbai since long & nobody is having problem for that infact Navratir & ganesh festival are celebrated equally in MUMBAI...but when it come to group particularly from recent Bihiari & bhaiya it worsens the situation...he has not said wrong about BiG B also..what he said that if such a giant has affections towards his home town i am a very simaple man shall have affection to my home...

this sarcastic letter aptly potrays the gravity of situation,1 fact that it misses out on is that dere was a strong proposal to make bombay a union territory which this city deserved.
( Posted: Saturday , February 09, 2008 at 20:45 )
well gunjan, I like to tell you one thing, so called Bombay was not gifted to Maharashtrians, 105 people has spilled their blood for it, so now if u say give it up, why should we spare it. What good other union territories are? Just by making it union territory, probably u shall make it worst. Everyone wants a share from Mumbai (Even Up/Bihar) why should that be, does these states do anything good than just populating india ?

The comments made here are very thoughtful and I agree with it. Just wanted to add to it that, what if the same things starts happening with Marathi people outside of maharashtra?
Would they like the same treatment with themselves?
In my opinion, the people in maharashtra are very open hearted and easy going expect for few, who try to CREATE issues for personal/political benefits.
On the issue of language to speak, I think we all are free to use any language as the basic purpose of using any language is to communicate with others. If I speak tamil and the person I talk to knows only marathi, then it doesn't make sense to him. So we should use a common language, say Hindi or English.
If someone say we need to speak Tamil in tamilnadu, then why do we speak English all-together in India?
