Does Mumbai belong to Maharashtrians?

Is Mumbai exclusive to Maharashtrians? This should be a no-brainer, but since Raj Thackeray reignited the debate, it's an issue worth exploring, if only to see what turns up. The timing first. What pressed the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena...

gaurav raj thackrey has achieved what he wanted to. with all the the airtime and newspaper coverage he has succeeded in his mission to gain the much needed publicity after he left from shiv sena. thanks to media he has a larger vote bank for him now. situation would have been different (better) had he been not given this much attention.

vikas The pressure of competitive politics among Thackreys and inability of the state government (Or, is it the case of NCP's electoral politics of NCP?) to act decisively are responsible for the current situation.

Apropos today's statement of the Maharashtra Chief Minister's statement in a press conference, Congress President should sack him and appoint a lawyer as the new Chief Minister as Vilasrao wants to seek legal opinion every time Thackreys speak or write.

more ROGER Thank you to you all for making Mumbai the cosmopolitan city it is today even though it has happened at the cost of the local Marathi speaking people.I totally agree, people living in Mumbai should not speak even 2 words of Marathi, so what if they happen to have stayed here for 20 years(one glaring example was your highly esteemed ,intelligent participant Puja bedi who couldn't even speak Hindi leave alone Marathi).Infact its my view that on the contrary we Marathi speaking people should be learning all the remaining 21(point to be noted- there are 22 languages now,not 18 as your anchor on IBN7 was saying in this same talk show to which Mr Venkatesh is referring) languages mentioned in the 8th schedule and when we move to another state we Maharashtrians should be expected to know the local language of that place.Who cares if the MARATHI manoos gets justice in his own state.Sorry for that.Mumbai and Maharashtra is for everyone. We should be taking and continue to take the responsibility of all citizens because other states cannot stand up.Let the uncontrolled influx continue, lets have more 26 julys, lets travel in more squashed "local" train compartments like packed sardines, have more slums, more traffic and finally start electing more Laloos and Mulayams here cause they are much better than our good for nothing Deshmukh and Patil.
So others like Karunanidhi can speak for Tamil pride(including LTTE),Communists for China,SGPC can glorify Bhindarwale, Modi for gujarati asmita but how dare anyone speak for Maharashtrians especially in MARATHI(by the way no one from the media has understood that speech or trying not to understand it).
Other states have been carved out on linguistic basis but not Maharashtra.Wonder Mumbai is its capital? or should it be Bombay?. Yes we all including myself are truly anti national.
But even if others find it difficult to say it i will say
JAI MAHARASHTRA
JAI HIND.

dwarkanath sharma i am here since 1978.
in india all states like UP , bihar , karnataka , assam & others were created on basis of spoken language. so naturally the maharashtrians have full right 2 claim respect for their state language & nationals .we must give it . note there was no compulsation in mumbai/maharashtra before some time.
after the protests againsts south indians they had accepted marathi & r now safe today . we north indians had great culture of honour. but the new people coming 2 here do not respect anyone . here we r around 50-69 lakhs. why these people left their own states?
this is 2b noted people from mumbai & maharashtra are good & soft spoken well educated thats why we are living here pecefully.

we the people outsiders r responsible for all happening in mumbai . i am here since 1945 and enjoying life in mumbai . first of all up govt should teach its people 2 respect others culture & language .
many people r coming here for job . nobody had denied it to anyone but now there is tremendous pressure on our mumbaikars . even having higher educated youngsters r still looking for job . nobody even central govt is helping mumbai. we were also ignored even on 26 july 2005.

the politicians r acting very nicely about north indian drama where were they when we were in the water at that time nobody was there looking for mumbai & their people in mumbai.
i want 2 remember u separation of bangadesh from pakistan. was on protect the languge bengali.
now a days parties from utter pradesh r seeking 2 capture mumbai. if it happens no one will look for people from utter pradesh as they will get heaven(moneyyyy).
so leave in mumbai peacefully & respect each others.

Biju G We, the Indian citizens have always been adept at carrying on legacies, be it of our families, culture and traditions. So it comes as no surprise to me that the legacy of divide and rule which I wrongly believed the Raj took back with them still lives on in our country. I was also wrong to believe that we have left the horrors of partition behind us in 1947. In my humble opinion Mumbai can never become a truly global city like Shanghai,NYC or Singapore, a dream many of Mumbai's "Rulers" want its hapless citizens to live in. As a matter of fact, the so called "national leaders" of the present India have not understood the idea of a "nation" in the real sense of the word. Coming to the question, I would like to ask, is it Maharashtra or Maharashtrians alone who have made Mumbai what it is today ? From a island of fishermen to a vibrant megapolis. If and only if, the answer is yes, then it belongs to them. I believe Bombay, the great city that it once was lost its pride when it lost its name in 1995.

Mukund Sir,

On 14.2.2008 , Being a Valentine Day , I went out with my family for Dinner in One Hotel named Veg World located on pokharan road no. 2 at THANE & Not Mumbai. While returning , I asked Hotel manager in MARATHI whether Hotel is open in Morning hours also & if so at what time ? to my surprise , He responded that he does not know marathi and I should ask question in hindi/English.

Dear H. R. Venkatesh tell me what you have to say about above incidence and whether Mr. Raj Thakre's demand is Logical or NOT.

I hope you will now know why MARATHI people get angry.

expecting Reply.

BelieverInOne India This should be easy to sort out.
1) Make disturbing communal harmony an offence without possibility of bail.
2) At least in some cases (considering the flaws in the judicial system), like this one, it should make it easy enough to put people like Raj Thackeray in jail for a period of time.
3) In the meantime, put Maharashtra under army rule for a period of 6 months and beat the heck out of the hooligans, whether from Shiv Sena, MNS, Samajwadi Party or whoever else. (It's been 9 years since Kargil anyway, so the army might be itching for some action)
4) Watch the problem sort out.

In short, in cases like these, offence is the best defence.

sudhirggandhi It is really silly to call ourselves,Mubaities,Upites,Bhiaris,Punjabis,Tamilians and so on.Unless n untill we laern and be proud to call ourselves as Bhatiyas or Indian first than only we can all reap the seed of harmony, progress.,It is the present politicians to further their end motive have started subdiving India into various states and r still thinking of adding further states.Ask them to meditate in the foot hills of the Himalayas, without any of their camchas near them & they will realise what kind of seervice they done to our country. They will never shoe their face to the world. The meaning will be well understood by the people.

Ajay What I would like to ask all these people who are sermonising maharastrians is why do we have only 1 cosmopolitian city in India which is mumbai ? Since the last 30 years I have not come across any one using the word cosmopolitian to discribe any other city in India What is the reason for this ? Does the local politics ensure that outsiders are kept at bay to ensure that the city does not become "cosmopolitian" ? Even after 60 yrs of independece are we to have only 1 cosmopolitan city ? Does mumbai alone needs to carry the burden/responsibility of being cosmopolitian ?
