First Ladies of India

It cannot get more ironical than this. India swears in her first woman President, Pratibha Patil. The same day, the first Indian woman to join the Indian Police Service in 1972, Kiran Bedi, is denied the post of Police Commissioner...

Kartikeya Kiran Bedi is like Oprah in the Civil Services. She is pretty able in what she does, but sometimes one gets the feeling she believes her own propoganda.A million officers a year in the Civil Services are unjustifiably transferred or just simply at the wrong end of a administrative lobby. It's a flawed system where officials have to pander to politicians.Kiran Bedi is just playing the Gender card when it's obviously not the issue.

Bhuvahsya Excellent article. It is sad that our system does not ensure quality. Regret to observe a dull & controversial Pratibha step into shoes of luminaries like Radhakrishnan,Prasad , Sharma or our very own Kalam. She may be the first citizen of this country by never my president.

Sujata Behuria The stories against basic rights of women abound in India -without limitation of class, caste, colour or creed. If she is a woman, she has no rights. My story goes something like this:-
I was born the only daughter of an IRS offcial. He retired as an incometax commissioner. I have two brothers - one is a police official in Delhi police and the other is a senior public sector official.
My father died in 1999 - his 'will' said that he had left all his property to his two sons - as his daughter has been married 'off' in a well to do family?
This is the truth we live in. The daughter is not entitled to any property - and if the law allows it, the men in our society keep us out of it. It makes no difference whether the men are our father, brother or husband. Earlier the women's dowry were usurped by her in-laws. When the law banned dowry, the men in her own family continue to keep her away from any rights to any property, under some guise or the other, including emotional blackmail. So now it is a free lunch for the men - just disinherit the woman.

When my husband's father died and kept him away from the will - the court asked him for his no-objection. No such no-objection was asked from me when my father kept me out of his will. At least my husband and his father had a disagreement. My only fault in my family was that I was born a girl child.
This is the state of the educated. The keepers of the law, when it comes to their self-interest are mired in archaic cultural values. When will this change? What will happen to women until then? Will they be married 'off' by parents and be second class citizens for life, because they will not be entitled to property.
My opinion is that any government offcial who denies women their legitimate rights equal to thier sons, should be disenfranchised and stripped 'off' his official position. A will that disallows daughters property must be disallowed unless the real reasons are mentioned in the will itself.

Bhaskar yes...the article is most correct in what it wants to portray....recently it came in the news that 'Madam Presedent' has discontinued the practice of President Kalam of cancelling his meetings in case the time was not adhered to!!! What more does everyone of bear in the name of having a woman president

Hello Ms. Kiran Bedi didn’t make it to the position because she doesn't enjoy support from political arena like Ms. Patil, who after being involved in scam made it to the top post in Inida. It's not the credibility but sycophancy that works.

Tell me something how many of us had heard this name “Yudhvir Singh Dadwal” before July 25 this itself says who is more successful.

Arun Kumar Beautifully written article. The author should have added the name of Sheila Dixit, CM, Delhi and Sonia the de facto Prime Minister, apart from that of Pratibha! When they can't even get the women's reservation bill see the light of the day, what can one expect from them. They want "yes" men or women and certainly not the ones like Kiran Bedi, who thinks and acts by herself!!

Raj Singh Articel on Kiran Bedi is just ownderful and maybe such issues in future beconme focal points for a change. Congress and those who voted for Pratibha firt woman Prez was just one of the points to justify and sound good to the public since very thing else was bad and most did not want her as Prez. Those who voted for her had to show to public a reason for them to that. Now they can say that they voted for a woman to be Prez. Why Pratibah with so many skeletons?? Why not Kiran Bedi, a distinguished person, who has won the heart of the nation. I am sure even Bhairon Singh Shekhawat would have withdrawn his papers was it Kiran Bedi. We would all have been so proud if Kiran Bedi would have been nominted for that post, even if it was Congress pert or Sonia proposing her name. Its good to see blogs on such subject. When we have such clear thinking people what are we doing about it. Why dont we use the blog to start a mass movement, We have a perfect tool to reach out to people without any fuss and without any travel. I propose that we work towards Kiran Bedi as PM or Prez candidate in next elections. Why not have Pratibha impeached and hev Kiran Bedi in her place afetr 2009? How many would go for it?
