In the urban barracks of Nizam's city, one can never be quite certain what is it that its soldiers want. Maybe it is true of most metros, but Hyderabad at least, has been a baffling labyrinth of desires, dreams and... Read The Article
if the article was written to revive memories of hydersbad & its past lazy splendour, then it is grossly incomplete& inadequately researched.people like varavara rao live in eutopic world & most of the times, speak of impracticalities. they live in the past, refuse to acknowledge the present in allits reality & then try to do some good for their fellow humans. communism of yester yars is dead & these people have to reinvent themselves & update their philosophy to the needs of present times to be able to of some value & help to the society ( which they can but dont ).todays hyd is vibrant & prospering on the shopulders of its midle class. what is missing in the whole "thaali" is some civic sens, especially in the " neorich".if hyd canhave a balance between development & its composite culture , there will be no other place like it to live. forget other cities like chennai which are totally jingoistic about language.and i have tasted almost all veg cuisines inindia atleast. i can vouch anytime- telugu cuisine is better than most except gujarat/ rajasthani thaali.madraasi food lags far behind .

Hi Shree... I shall certainly try to oblige you in my next post. It's just that in a blog, one has more freedom to use flowery language than in a news story. I was not trying to say I like Hyd or Chennai or Mumbai better. It was just my experience of Hyderabad and the mixture of emotions it evokes to an outsider like me. But shall certainly try to "cut the load on the language"! :) cheers

Hyderabad Blues!! Ms. Ravishankar, by the end of your article, I didn't understand whether you were supporting the Naxal cause or opposing it. I was just curious about what did you want to convey by this article. I feel people like Varavara Rao, Bala Gopal, etc., naxal symapthising writers, who falsely claims themselves to be human rights activists should be put behind the bars. Because, they BLINDLY support the naxalism and their criminal ideology and intentions. For every naxal encounter, they raise their voices and try to be in the news. I am sure such symapthising writers recieve some under the table remuneration and benefits from these dastardly naxals. Why don't these self claiming human rights activists raise any voice against the other sub-human species called corrupt politicians??

I do not understand as to why some people take such articles to heart. If sandhya is more happy in Hyderabad than she was in Delhi or Chennai who cares??If some body is proud of his janmabhoomi ,so be it. if some body likes Pulusu ,so what. If some body likes Sambhar, let him be happy with it. I like Italian food but I am an Indian. Ha Ha.

Mr.Sriharsha Nobody stops you from being proud of your janmabhoomi but not at the expense of offending other states' cuisine.Pls Dont compare the ORDINARY Telugu pulusu to our delicious sambar.I have tasted Andhra cuisine for many years and excepting the biriyani it has got nothing else to boast for ,let alone the Spice content. So pls try tasting our sambar and then comment.

Mr Catchme: Did I express my dislike for sambar in my observations? Not at all...I only said it's different from the Andhra pulusu...Sambar has its own stamp of quality and taste. No other item can replace it. After all, it's the identity item to be known as madrasi for many North Indians !!

Hyderabad blues ! At last a topic of my choice. It beats me why Hyderabad is associated with biriyani only. I am a "mulki" Hyderbadi for over 34 years and owing to reasons of survival I have been forced to become a Delhiite for the rest of my life !! Well, Hyderabad word conjures in me more than for biriyani but for its other flavours like the festivals (no Ganesh immersion, please), the breathtaking monsoon phase and the pleasant wintry weather unlike in Delhi, which is bone-biting (or chilling?).The spring brings you the splendid Ugadi flavours in different shades and the mouthwatery mirchi bajjis in winter (mirapakaya bajjis, sounds spicy and tongue-piercing!!) are what the native of Hyderabad wishes to cherish such memories life long. Political ideologies and political activism are more in Hyderabad, than, if I am not mistaken, elsewhere. Why only Vara Vara Rao, what about other committed writers like Cherabandarajus, Raavi Shastry, and Muppala. Their writings would even put hardcore Marxist writers of the East to shame. I am unsure whether I got the essence of the writer's intent behind her piece. Pardon me if I had digressed or failed to assimilate her meat of her message. Hyderabad would remain the seed for my growth and evolution into what Iam now. Yes, the fragrance of the South Indian cuisine, the curries, the ulava charu, the Telugu pulusu (not the sambar of the TN please, which in my view has a different taste) and the jasmine-like rice pellets can never be replaced with any other cuisine in the world. Am I too jingoistic about my janmabhumi? Is there anything wrong to be selfish about your land of birth? None at all. Thanks Sandhya, for reviving my old memories once again. Mr V. Sriharsha/Delhi

Its true. The indian system sucks out the energy, honesty, good, humility etc out of our lives slowly to make us realize and put us in place (i.e. where we belong)and hammer the protestors into submission by sooooo many methods and ways that come into the minds of our brilliant and best leaders and officers. They are the best and they know the best.Period.
