In praise of vintage

Old buildings talk, and give our cities character. Why are we razing them? Old buildings fascinate me. The older the better. Whenever I go to a new place, I first try to look up its old buildings. ...

Ajesh M V I too agree with you. The historical & aesthetic value of old buildings are of no interest to modern civilians,I feel. Buildings or malls, revenue is the motto today. Really happy to learn that somebody else too is thinking & worrying of things other than terrorism, sensationalism and the like.

knowsnotmuch Actually, it seems its the British arcitecture which seems to grab you. Its really unfortunate that we dont have an artistic Indian architecture now - its there in our past - but not any more.
People now build their houses in isolation - every man is an island. If you look to the past - you will note houses in an ally were in consonance with each other.

The present architectural style seems to be "unique" (stick out like a sore thumb) OR conform (rectangular boxes maximizing space) - BAD. History will forget you Mr Architect.

SHREE OLD is always considered obsolete, and people forget it. if at all it's remembered, it's like a nostalgic journey, ending up in not achieving anything practical. Because we can't recreate history. Starting from the Bangalore city life style to Cultural camps in Ninasam, everything has undergone sea change... which we just can't get back or recreate.. no way to avoid, stop or escape this..

more Venkat Tumba olle article Satish avare!!
Me too rue the loss of old structures, not for the lost history, but bcoz the new buildings which replace these old structures dont have any character or individuality, they are intimidating and have almost identical style and I am sure when they r pulled down, nobody will write an article like this!

Gaurav Atri Satish, your blog reminded me of Old buildings in Lucknow specially Mayfair Theatre building, ya those were the days, a morning show of a classic English movie and then return home for lunch.

more Blorean Nice article. But shouldnt you think about time ? Do we miss the quaint village that Bangalore once was ? By pushing that village to just 4 towers now, has Bangalore lost its character ?

It has developed a new character. The Bangalore of the British, however beautiful is slowly giving way to the Bangalore of the new. Rest assured that in 10-15 years when these malls will be pulled down, we will get an article on the beautiful malls of bangalore
