Killer disease wipes out ghariyals

There's a mysterious disease stalking the gharial (the Indian crocodile). Even as I write this, dead bodies of the gharial are being dragged out from the river Chambal. Females, males and sub-adults - the death toll continues to rise day...

Bijoy Bahar,
Your concern appears genuine but your reportage is merely emotional. A lot of facts have come to light since you reported this and you may want to post a follow-up. And it's unfair to blame government agencies simply because they are government agencies. It has taken ample research for the scientists studying the gharial deaths to conclude that it is not an epidemic, but a case of poisoning. There are larger issues to consider here. I am distressed at how the media prefers to rake up the muck rather than explore and investigate the issue.

I have posted my reaction at: http://www.ibnlive.com/blogs/author/1226/50088/bijoyvenugopal.html

ramesh Its a pity that in a country where millions fight and riot for unnecessary causes like religion and caste, there are hardly few souls who care for estranged animals that share the same rights to live in this land. And I cannot understand why the media is so reluctant to take this as a major crisis in our ecology. Perhaps you people are busy gossiping about Kareena and Shahid Kapoor

Praveen Rai It is very sad to acknowledge the fact that even though so many ghariyals have died considerable effort has yet not been put in. It seems that the government bodies have not yet learnt their lessons from the issues in past or they are waiting for an intervention from a major public figure for this situation to be recognized and dealt.
The problem has aggravated to extent that the number of ghruyals have plummeted sharply. I wish and hope the government takes appropriate steps to counter it.

Balajee I suggest the Indian Government take this as a crisis and take immediate action about the disease affecting the ghariyals.

Nitin Appreciate the article written by Bahar...hope the authorities wake up to this & show the necessary resolve in putting an end to this really unfortunate situation that the poor Gharials find themselves in.Amidst all the wildlife conservation efforts being carried on accross the planet..there is however a species that is better off extinct & that is "The Great Indian Politician".

Deepak This is atrocious. Why haven't anything being done. What’s the guarantee it won’t spread to other species or even the humans. Where are the wild life activist's? “First species in independent India to have gone extinct” That’s terrible to hear.

Amit If Gharials die the signs are ominous. They are the sturdiest creatures in water. In Bhagwat Gita, lord says that he is present as Gharial (or muggar) in water. Such is the importance of this animal.
