Narayana Murthy as Prez would be a shame

I write this at my own risk. I know I invite the ire of Indian IT professionals by talking this way about their patron saint. Kannadiga software pros, their parents, and other Infosys worshippers will call me an...

sumit If a scientist can become president ...for sure a corporate leader will do much better in leading india...

the important thing is leadership... Also the remark about national anthem is uncalled for. If you have heard NRN then you would know how much patriotic he is and his remark was more towards making everyone laugh..

Shankar I cannot imagine a respeceted person as Mr. NR Narayana Murthy has attributed compromising reasons to avoid the rendition of our national anthem. I have attended his talks and they bubbe with patriotism. I am cynical about the credebility of such news reports and would request such bloggers to think twice before demeaning such an icon.

Sachin Purohit The writer has raised 3 issues to put up his case against Narayan Murthy as president:
1. His controversial statement on singing National Anthem - I very much agree with the writer. It was
a stupid statement from a potential president. It seems like an attempt to flaunt the presence of foreign
employees on the rolls of Infosys (Big deal!). How can singing of a national anthem embarass the foreigners? No one is asking them to sing along.
2. About Narayan Murthy's views on reservations - The writer is not able to convince any of us as to what's
wrong with Murthy's views on this. The example given about Murthy having studied in a government funded school is simply irrelevant to the issue of reservation. Needless to say that I support Murthy on this issue lock, stock and barrel.
3. About Murthy saying those who don't know English have very bleak future - I think that is a harsh truth. It is unfortunate but true. And then knowing english, in no way reduces the status of national languages.

Suggestion to put a ban on people from corporate world from becoming presidents is foolish to say the least. A honest corporate of Indian origin becoming president of India is much better than a liar, non-corporate, political non-entity of foreign origin becoming PM of India. Murthy could have made a good president but he shattered his chances with that arrogant statement.

Anurag Mr.Murthy undoubtedly is a fine candidate, like Dr.Kalam, he has a brilliant track record with many firsts and has been instrumental in placing the country in the world map in the technology sector. However his biggest disadvantage is not having any political experience and that may pose to be a serious handicap.Definitely to me not a v.fantastic choice. His views on reservation are simplistic and lack imagination. As far as the current episode is concerned his unconditional apology ends the matter and it would be unfair to hold it against him. The biggest contribution that he and his contemporaries have rendered is to have created an ambitious young generation.

ABS I am an IT professional and work in US. Let me tell you that if anyone calling himself Indian feels shame in reciting our national anthum that too in India then he has no right to call himself Indian. Let alone making him president he does not deserve to be called Indian at first place. Shame on you NRN shame on you... and three cheers for the writer of wrote this article. Job well done....

more S Varghese This article plays to the emotions of people and has very little rational content. Patriotism does not lie in doing symbolic things like playing the national anthem, hoisting the flag and so forth. Do you believe for an instant that a flag-hoisting Laloo Prasad or Mulayam is more patriotic than NRN? Not in a 100 years. Do you think an anthem singing Bangaru Lakshman or any other politician is more patriotic than NRN? Not for a moment. These politicians are for their own gain-yes in their words they sound like statesmen. NRN is different. He is a statesman in the true sense of the word. I am not idolising him, but being an ex-employee of Infosys I can vouch for NRN's credibility. I also do not bvelieve in these symbolic things like singing anthem, hoisting flags etc. Still I believe I am more of a patriot compared to my friends who do all these symbolic things for the following reasons.

1) I believe patriotism is in your deeds than in your words. I pay my taxes (and interest if delayed), pay my custom duties in full, do not bribe to get undeserved gain.
2) My friends who cheat on taxes, bribe custom officials, and break the laws of the land are sometimes very particular about these symbols. I do not call them patriots. They are HYPOCRITES.
3) To me actions speak louder than words. The people who criticized NRN are the politicians and journos who may not have contributed even 1% of what NRN did for the nation.
4) To me culture-whether Indian or American or anything- is not above the individual. If my Indian-ness is judged by by conformance to culture, then you can call me .... whatever. To me conforming to the rule of the land is more importantthan culture.
5) English education: I would say India had been able to achieve so much because of it's people's knowledge of English. Now you may give me names like Abdul Kalam, etc who studied from vernacular language schools, but these are geniuses who could have succeeded anywhere-India or Africa. These are exceptions

rahul I do agree with author on the view of national anthem and national pride which should be the top most priority anywhere, anytime and in any case.

I disagree on reservation issue. It should be based on financial condition and merit and not at all based on cast and relegion.
