Narayana Murthy as Prez would be a shame

I write this at my own risk. I know I invite the ire of Indian IT professionals by talking this way about their patron saint. Kannadiga software pros, their parents, and other Infosys worshippers will call me an...

Sanjeev If Mr. Murthy is feeling shame for singing National Anthem at his company premises just because that will embarace the foreginers then he is not a true Indian. We are and should be proud of our national anthem not embarace by singing it. And after this artical, I am sure he should not be a president, well he can be a money making machine for IT.

Nitin Good article. It speaks of the double standards being followed by the so-called captains of the corporations.

nikhil bandiwadekar I think NRN is being targeted just for the sake of it. Would we accept any corrupt politician having criminal background in place of NRN? When targeting him, we should not forget the IT revolution he has brought in India, his helping hand to noble causes through Infosys Foundation, his integrity and values, his act of keeping promise of retiring from the helm of Infy at 60, his decision of not to run Infy as his family business and not to employ his children at Infy. He is a businessman with a difference and that's why even Dr. Kalam calls him 'fantastic'. When talking about caste reservation, one forgets the fact that he is promoting reservation for financially backward classes. When he says English is a must for us to survive, he is merely being practical about business opportunities in India. He has not targeted govt-funded schools, but is concerned about the quality of education there. He vehemently fights for good governance and practices in Banglore and surrounding areas.
His gesture of not singing national anthem is the act of protest, but that doesn't mean he is incapable for the post of President. If we go by similar measures, very few politicians earn a right to be on any position because of their background.
I think this article is written purely with the goal of tarnishing NRN's image. I don't buy this article at all.

Harsha I agree. We don't need pseudo-patriots as President. A President has to rise above business-mindedness and think in a more philanthropic way. Indian economy doesn't thrive only on IT.

ashwin Mr. Satish - you have been very forthright in your views and I congratulate you for that. Mr. NRN, sorry to say this - but a lot of people will hate me for it - is a creation of a carefully orchestrated PR exercise. No doubt he, his co-promoters at Infosys and his company created wealth for innumerable employees, investors and so many others.

Let's face a simple fact - he is a shrewd businessman (he is perfectly entitled to be one and God bless his success). But that does not entitle him to wear the halo of a saint and a messiah. He would do well to stick to his job of corporate building and keep out of nation building. He would be an incompetent President. Not to mention that he is absolutely no comparision to statesmen like Sarvapally Radhakrishna or Dr. Rajendra Prasad or to an eminent scientist and selfless human being - Dr. Abdul Kalam.

In all this I must beg to differ with you on one issue, on your criticism of NRN's take on English. I was a member of the audience he addressed, when he spoke on this subject and he clearly said that it was important for all students to 'also' learn English, to make them globally competitive. He did not say that the students' native languages should ever be ignored. Something very important in today's seamless global environment.

Pam Saxena Narayan Murthy would make the most visionary President ever and he would ensure the country would progress not regress.

Kamal Just another piece of sensationalism.
A popular, successful person is always a subject of discussion. You are wooried about people like Lalu, Paswan, Deve Gowda accepting NRN. May I ask where was the patriotism when Lalu was deep asleep in a national rally, blaring National Anthem.
Stop criticising people who can make the difference.
NRN is, has and will make a difference to India.

Nandan Narayana Murty has himself said he does not wish to become president or enter politics. Why are we talking this media speculation so seriously and calling him greedy or someone who can't see beyond money? If only you know about something called Infosys foundation you would not call him greedy. I for one hope Prez Kalam is granted a second term, but i guess it's not fair to be critical of a person who has done no harm to anybody nor has expressed a desire to become the president. His views on English language is not incorrect given that a large section of the middle class Indian population rely on that language for their livelihood. His views on reservation too are shared by many. Perhaps Mr Satish thinks Mayawati or Lalu (who do not speak English but support reservation) would be superb choices! And I read somewhere that Narayana Murty may not be an ideal choice because he is a Brahmin! That's what I call reverse discrimination.

Sanman Personally I do not agree with him.

Indian culture is built and held with some sort emotion even 99.9% of Indians lead their life in emotion. As long as the protest or agitation is held peacefully there should not be any problem. Even India got independence with protest and agitation emotionally not with figure and facts.

Narayan Murthy always thinks like a businessman in many issues even in primary education system (he is not at all a expert or pundit in that)

He always talk about competing with global you need English I agree.. but he has to realize that in the same way local language should be given the importance. A common man needs local language more than English in his day to day life. There are many fields which has no global competition which needs 100% local language.

He has to understand Bangalore is not Karnataka, Bangalore is one of the part in Karnataka

In yesterdays function where Kalam visited Infosys he said no need to sing National anthem becoz there are foreign dignitaries they get embraced!!!!!! I really do not understand this.

I agree he has taken land by paying money to the poor farmers but what happened to son of farmers.. he has not given a single job or he has not helped for their education those poor fella working in some hotels

Everything can’t be business.

He has done wonders in IT, hats up to him. We salute him.

Let him not venture into unknown fields to him

Zed Excellent Article. I am glad that at least one journalist had the courage to be open and critical of Mr.Murty. Most news channels and news papers portray him as the next Gandhi which is blashphemous.
