SANJAY SENGUPTA Dear Sagarika,
I fully agree with you on every account you have mentioned in the article. It is time for not only the congress but for other parties as well to thing of putting genuine leaders in the seats rather than sons and daughters. Putting up inefficient people in position that they don't deserve or do not fit not only degrades the post but lowers the standards of decision making as a result of which the common people and country suffers. I am a firm believer that right person should be in the right place, be it in business, politics, sports and any other speciality or non-speciality job. You must have a principle to be in politics as politics is just not a career, it is serving the people of the country.

Affan Most of the facts mentioned here are true, the only mistake here is that you've compared cricket with politics. No doubt theres lot of politics in cricket too, but that set aside, the difference being that cricketers are chosen based on their performance and not on their Charisma.

Most, almost all elected nowadays are solely selected on their ability to speak or woo the voters with their fantasy speeches. They are not chosen based on whether they can perform at the level they are selected for.

Secondly, the selection process. The players of the Indian team are selected by professionals who know the game. While the MPs and MLAs are elected by people who dont even know their basic rights, let alone the agenda of the party and its past progress. The "Quality" factor does not play here, only the quantity matters.

In cricket the rules are the same and apply to all and no one can break the rules. While for our politicians......

Finally, the main objective of a cricket match is to win. While in Indian politics, its not about serving the common man, but all about staying in power.

Manoj Thuppalai Awe inspiring and thought provoking.... The idea of comparing Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rajiv Gandhi need to be seen from the perspective of the "Need to have a meritocratic system in the political parties" so that we get the best of the national leaders to lead our nation. Point is well taken....

MCS
Comparing with presennt indian cricket team sees not good since youth is not intrested to make their carrear in politics.
so in this situation we have to accept the people coming to politics trough their family background, atleast we can have some fresh blood through this.
Chanting of "Gandhi" from rahul baba is not really good he has to come with new ideas whcih can inspire the youth

Roshan Chetry The time of comparison is simply against Rahul :

1. Dhoni is in power, Rahul is in the opposition.

2. Dhoni is passing through peak of his career, it's still to come for rahul.

3. Other team members of Indian team have very good support for Dhoni, but congress lacks strong members - only sonia is there to support.

I will write a blog again one day on CNN IBN on the same topic when Rahul Gandhi would be Prime Minister of India and hope Dhoni would remain Captain by then.

Prof.M.nyamathullah RE : Rahul Baba & Mahi:
Mahi has been playing cricket for the last ten years! yet he was catapulted to capataincy very recently.
We, Indians have the habit of praising the winner and blasting the looser.Prior to the last two wins, Dhoni was also attacked!
It is really very difficult to make any forecast about anybody's success in the future!
On the stage of Indian politics many leaders came and disappeared! Very few only are well remembered because of their solid achievements.A critical review of them , compels us to conclude that the Nehru-Gandhi family members had long staying power, because of their early exposure to Indian politics and their observation of elders' decision making scenes.
Hence, among the youthful leaders Rahul has an edge over others. When he is sent down to the field, it is hoped that he would prove his mettle with the bat and the ball!
In the 21st century, and in the context of "the millennium development goals set by the UN for 2015", a young leader with forward looking views and sincere in his aims only could be successful.

Samir without doubt, your column hits the right note..!! Congress has to break the glass and think out of the box if they were to stay in race..!! How long this could go on..??? Why can;t Mr Manu Shanghvi mention Sachin Pilot, Milind Deora, Schindia and many other Youngsters aspiring to move upward in congress. Ofcourse Pilot and Schindia have family tag attached but they should be give a fair chance as Rahul who still need to learn the first lesson of politics, aka, Know what to speak, when and where..!!! God Save Mother India..!!!

Neelam Someone writing in the newspaper The Statesman had coined the term "privilentsia" during Rajeev Gandhi's reign to describe people who have achieved power and its privileges not because of intellectual or other pursuits but because of the privilege of birth. How true it is even now in the political arena, especially the Congress...
