The Congress could learn a few things from the Indian cricket team.
Two young Indian men are on a unique journey. Rahul Gandhi, 37 year old MP from Amethi and bearer of India's most important political surname has just... Read The Article

It is by far the biggest insult to Mahendra Singh Dhoni, his talent, guts, hard work and achivements. Sagarika, you have done what Aussies could not do. How on Earth, can a sensible person compare Dhoni(a national hero) with Rahul Gandhi( Congress sycophants prince charming). In a short span of time, Dhoni has become a world beater breaking many stereo-types both within and outside India wheras Rahul is the product of a sterotype. Rahul is approaching 40 now and what have been his achievements after being born in Nehru-Gandhi family. Despite the unconditional support of entire Congress party, Union Government and media, Congress lost badly whereever he campaigned and it was true for UP, Gujarat, Himachal etc. His presence is felt only in TV studios where with the support of friendly anchors congress spokespersons sing paeans in his favour. Congress will have to realise that it takes much more than photo-ops to create a national hero. And in my view,a person becomes a national hero. It cant be created on a sustainable basis.
Even in politics, there are many leaders who are salf-made- Vajpayee, Advani, Jaitley, Modi, Mayawati, Sushma Swaraj,Nitish Kumar, Lalu, Mulayam, Jyoti Basu, Prakash Karat and the list is endless. We may agree/disagree with their politics but all these men/women are self made. It is only in Congress that the " High Command" picks the right men. It is not right to brand the entire political spectrum as congress. Babalog culture is congress's gift to 21st century India and smaller parties such as SP, RJD, Shiv Sena are also adopting it but still BJP and Left are almost untouched by this culture.
And please dont compare Dhoni with Babalog. It is like comparing Sachin with Rohan Gavaskar. Fortunately in a 21st century India, we know the difference between Sachin & Rohan Gavaskar.

No,no,no. This won't do. You have left out the most important factor of incorporating social justice through caste based reservations in cricket, business and bollywood. Mahi may have come from a poor Uttarakhand village family, but he is a rajput and thus has deprived some not so deserving SC/ST/OBC of a chance to have a shot at those crores. This merit verit humbug won't wash, since all men are created equal and just need the right break. We can start with a 49.5% reservation for SC/ST/OBCs in cricket, bollywood, business and politics apart from government and education where it has been the norm.
It's another matter that India will be at the bottom of the league in every field. But who really cares - social justice would have triumphed!

Hi sagarika, Liked your article but you mentioned somewhere that gandhi tested brand name of 100 yrs. but ofcourse you are using mahatma gandhi name too who have whatsoever no connection to this gandhi. but they are exploiting this surname isnt it. news channel like you should bring this thing more often for public. Nepotism and Corruption are two major factors which has led political system of india to such a mess. and when it comes to nepotism at national level, its congress, then regional level thakereys, gowda's.

The article posted by Sagarika Ghosh was absoulutely apropriate. We are the largest democracy; on the wheel of dynastic politics where we have Gandhis, Pilots, Scindhiyas, Jindals, Dixits, Singhs and many more sons of the soil(?) rather the sons of the political families which is as unfortunate as Nepal's monarchy. The comparision between Rahul and Dhoni was the real showcasse and perhaps the lesson for the Congress and Gandhi parivaar. thank you for such well studied and well written article.

When Dhoni dropped Ganguly and Dravid , he had made his intentions very clear - that his sole objective was to win and he would back those who would help him achieve it . He wanted young determined , agile and fit players. He was willing to stake his reputation and position in the team to achieve his goal . Rahul,Priyanka and Sonia ( one need to look at the triumverate as a whole ) sole consideration in team selection is loyalty and their objective is self preservation . They want to keep their family priviledges in tact and possibly enhance it by patronage and distributing key posts to loyalists . Selection of the right people for running critical positions in the country's administration is not in their scheme of things. Look at the appointments made by the family in the Election Commission ,HRD, Defence and Home Ministries etc ; not to speak of the President of India . Rahulbabas objectives are not designed to see India victorious ; whereas Dhoni's is . There is really no comparison between the two .

Congress was been in power with majority in my state(Tamil nadu) some decades back because of one man called Kamarajar(An uneducated man started free afternoon meals scheme in government schools knowing the situation of students from poor family),now there was no trace of congress in my state because now the administration was in the hands of business men and affluent people this is the case in many states, this should be changed people with real talent should be given chance if congress wants to stay in the race.
