Once dreaded Mafia don Sadhu Shetty told me ' look, we the Bunts are the only caste, who are into everything. We are really great. Nobody can match the Shettys and Rai s, Hegdes and Choutas '. The Police killed... Read The Article
Rarely u will find any Bunt or tuluva converted to christianity even during british/portuguese rule. Most of them migrated to tulu region from goa.which can be seen from the fact that they speak konkani which is not a local language. Also christians find it difficult to speak tulu even today.

- I had researched the tuluva folks - well bunts are not just the tuluvas, there are other communities that are grouped under Tuluva too -- certain facts are astonishing, when alexander the great came into India, apparently he married a tuluva princess, the tuluvas were the only ones who could make the canara region -- that is why they were called the nadavas -- people who build and found cities. That ruler in a tuluva can be seen from birth to death where a cross section of people from a barber to an untouchable is needed for his ceremonies, he does not run his show with just his kind. The fighter in them was the bhata ( warrior ) or bunta -- thus the bunt -- No harm in talking about themselves -- guess their outlook on hinduism and the world let us the christians expand in South canara, they lost their script just because the missionaries used kannada and malayalam for coverage as they controlled the print - today the canara church is the richest in India -- can't imagine something like this happenning in gujarath or hyderabad -- just my thoughts

Kids of Aishwarya/Abhishek would have interesting combination: Bunt, Bengali, UP, Punjabis. The kid is going to grow up as a TRUE Indian.

I think we should first consider ourselves as Indians before talking about communities. We should not make the same mistakes as our forefathers

Yes. You are right. Bunts population is not even 20 lakh. It is 13 - 15 lakhs. Rest even I know very well.
But my blog is only on Bunts in Mumbai. Not on entire community. Because of that I did n't include Bunts in Karnataka. He is Justice K S Hegde. Not K G Hegde. His son is Justice Santhosh Hegde.

Sathish,it was good read, have you overlooked the rowdy sheeters of the bunts - Don, Muthappa Rai, started as bank clerk in Vijaya bank, dabbled in cabaret joint in bangalore to become don of the underworld.Or that name Amar alva, shot in broad day lights in mangalore. DR. Amarnath Hegde, noted Cardiologist is no more, but Dr. Shantharam Shetty and Dr. Sudhakar Shetty are the pillars in Ortho- surgery, the good and bad co-exist.

Here are some other interesting facts about Tulu speakers to which category belong not only the Bunts but also other communities like the Mogaveeras,Billavas, Brahmins etc, etc :
1)The Alva ( or the Alupa) Dynasty - incidentally Alva is another Bunt surname - ruled without interuption for almost a 1000 years over the small territory of coastal Karnataka
2) Krishnadevaraya ( or Vikramidtya ) of the Vijaynagar Empire fame who was one of the greatest rulers of India was a Tuluva who incidentally was a great scholar of Sanskrit and Telugu (which was the official language of the Vijayanagara Empire)
3)In the olden days Tuluvas were credited with being masters of "Kalari" the martial art which is now associated with Kerala. In fact Malayalam poems like "Vadakkan Paatu" - a story about North Kerala Kalari masters talks about them going to the "Garadis" ( as these training centres were refered to in Tulu Nadu) for advanced training in Kalari.
4) Bunts are not just Hindus , a small but prominent minority still follow Jainism. For eg the Dharmadhikari of the famous Manjunatheshwara temple near Mangalore is a jain Bunt. In fact some of the old Bunt rulers of TuluNadu like the Chowtas were Jains. This is the reason that you will find a significant number of Jain monuments near Udipi / Mangalore the most famous ofcourse being the Jain bastis of Moodubidri and the Gomateshwaras at Karkala and Dharmastala.
5) Tulu language DOES have a script though it is not used any more as the Tuluvas now learn only Kannada when they go to schools in Karnataka or Malayalam in the Tulu district of Kasargode which is now part of Kerala.
6) Tulu Nadu is especially rich in folklore and there are many epics in Tulu the most famous being the "Siri Paddane". It is also the land of other interesting artforms like the Yakshagana , Bhoota Kola, etc.
7) Except for the Brahmins most other Tulu castes like Bunts, Billavas, Mogaveeras, etc are matrilineal (but NOT Matriarchial)

An article to axpress pride.Read it with a bemused smile...The whole Shilpa issue raged on racism and here is one article puttin forth india's own unique form of racism:) sometin tat is so ingrained in our mental make up tat we are yet to realize that we quite a hypocrite when we worry abt racial discrimation plaguing the world.
Ofcourse, one can get the tenor of the write up which is nothing but the joy of an achievement of what is supposed to be a statistically speaking small group of tribe in a country of one billion whic has contributed successful ppl. Evryone wants to be heard and when a group has to heard it as to have a way to call itself which typically in our country goes by communities/castes/religion. The bunts i assume dont have strong emotions associated with them... Can you imagine the OUTCRY if say a brahmin had written an article celebrating success this caste of ppl have brought in or a muslim publicising achievemnt of his kind in this country!! Then by now we would have been discussing issues of caste creed religion plaguing this country. The stars/achievers we talk about are very conscious to not talk about religion/community/caste.You cant imagine a Shah rukh sayin i am muslim and look how talented we are..it would be blasphemous! All said and done..a layman in this country does sit about and discuss ppl in terms of whr they belong..coz its very natural..but when put up in a public forum this way..it feels very childish and leaves a very bad taste.. we indians are a multicultural lot and lets celebrate tat!! and not proclaim one community/region/caste to be good and to be the one creating all the difference. Its the individual who is making the difference and not the community to which he or she belongs. i am also happy for achievemnts of the individuals mentioned here...but when its put across in term of 'hey its my community person doin well'...i am left with an alien feelin..why cant it stop with an Indian has done proud...why not???

Abhay
I still remember DP Satish's prevoius blog titled BANGALORE TO BENGALOORU – A BIG BANG OR A WHIMPER?In That blog he mentioned extensively how "Outsiders" have come to mint money, donot take initiative in learning Kannada, donot have any love Bengalooru.
But as soon it came to Bunts,he doesnot mind Bunts virtually ruling hotel buisness across mumbai(just like IT is ruled by non kannadigas in Bangalore). He doesnot mind bunts of mumbai speaking hindi instead of learning the local language marathi.
As a marathi let me write it
Bunts have virtually ruled over hotel and catering buisness in mumbai. There is hardly as much as marathi representation in the hotel across Mumbaias bunts have.Although there was a huge migration of bunts(from udipi/dakshina kannada) in Mumbai 2 decades ago, many still speak hindi instead of marathi.
DP Satish wrote this blog with pride as BUNTS belong to his state. He doesnot mind them ruling over Mumbai...but why doesnot he feels the same when it is an outsider in bangalore??Anybody's guess?

There is a popular saying in Tulunadu, Bantara abbara- horage singara, olage golisoppu,in other words, bunts love to flaunt what they have and more what they do not have. But all said done they are very humane.

Very good point...This guy D.P.Satish, calls non-kannadigas as 'outsiders' in karnataka and at the same time, takes pride when the bunts/kannadigas snatching the hotel and other business from the localites..What a shameless person. I hate the articles written by this person. Generally his articles glorifies kannadigas and NOT as indians in general. His writings divides us, the people of India in the name of casteism, community etc....I hope that Mr.D.P.Satish takes pride being an Indian and NOT just as a kannadiga.
