The Big Political Picture

The months from April to June are described as silly season for news. Summer vacations, politicians jaunting abroad, and journalists feeling the heat, where is the story, the refrain from most editors. Summer of 2007, though has been anything but...

Jaideep Why is everyone targeting Pratibha Patil? She must be the least corrupt Congress stalwart(?). She has only swindled 20 crores, helped her brother, who has committed one measly murder and grabbed some few acres for her husband. This is the least you are expected to do as a politician.

When you look at Bofors scam, oil for food scam, Harshad Mehta scam, fodder scam and so many other scams, 20 crores by Pratibha is chicken feed. Lets talk big numbers. One murder? think of the 84 riots, when thousands of sikhs were murdered on the streets of Delhi. The thousands of hindu/muslim riots during Congress rule in the states/center. Now these are the numbers which is top of mind for Congress wallahs, not peanuts like 20 crores or one murder or a few acres.

regards,
Jaideep

sujit singh Bhupen , even you have been conditioned by the thought processes of the likes of Suhasini Ali & Sagarika Ghosh. why this selective amnesia buddy ?

1. This period also saw conviction in India's worst post -independence commununal riots that took place in Bhagalpur in Bihar in 1989. And this happened in an NDA ruled Bihar - the so called communal political conglomerate . when thousands of muslims were buthchered in Bhagalpur - Congress was ruling the state and the centre -still nothing happened - you guys never cry about that . After the riots, Bihar was ruled by Lalu & his lumpen party for 15 years and still nothing happenned in Bhagalpur riots cases. stiil, you guys brand Lalu - a social & secular messiah - what rubbish ??????????
2. This period also saw Sonia's quattrochi walking away free from a court in Argentine.you know why bc CBI did not showcase a proper arrest warrant. What a shame ?? And what a fraud with Indian constituition but U guys prefered to look the other way. Do u guys have some kind of arrangement with Congress ? Come out clean man ..

Almost the same arrangement took place between Congress & some section of indian media before emergency was imposed. Is it a precursor to Emergency-II????

gourab Nothing could be a more perfect picture of the situation than whjat you have described through the article. what baffels be is we are the people who go in and either elect these goons to the pariliament and the LA or we abstain from voting and let these goons get elected unopposed. Why cant we, the Coffee sipping Middle class really pull our bums off the sofa and ustilize our presious votes rather than blame the system later. I go in to vote and destroye it, atleast that way i ensure that nobody else can utilize my vote falsely.
The problem lies with us. Police pulls us up in the trafic we prefer paying off Rs 50 and moving on rather than taking him on. We go to a Govt office to get something done we prefer getting it done fast by bribes. do we really have the right to claim that its the politicians who are to blame? Its we who have created this system.
To change first WE NEED TO CHANGE.

Ravi Bhupendra,

Just a passing thought, after reading your blog.
Dont you think being a journalist, you should have a unbias approach towards your blog?

Seems like you are have quite gunned your-self again one political party. And some of the facts were very well overlooked.
Anyways, democratic country...freedom of speech..isn't?

Sakti Bagchi Excellent article. It made me feel sad as a citizen well as proud to be an Indian.
It made me feel sad:
From the day of Independence politicians have tried the tricks to get what they want than what this country wants. I doubts the politicians who were known as Freedon fighters are really the people behind Indian Independence. India got indepence due to the sacrifice of the people whom we do not know not because of these hayped politicians. We have no choice other than choosing a bad from the group of igly people during election. Can we not do anything about it. I know my job, family are imprortant for me but still maintaining my job and staying with my family can I do anything to better this country's condition.
It makes me feel proud:
Despite all these we have moved on in these 6o years. Although many are struggling for food, decent life and justice in this country but still we have moved on. I feel we are in a train where many are there in 1st class AC and thinking we are proggressing, many in 2nd class sleeper and aspiring to go to 1st class AC in their next generation and many many many are in general compartments. But still train moved on irrespective of many without ticket passnegers bacause they have no money. I feel proud here that there are some officials and may be some unknown leaders who are really driving this train. I am proud to feel that our passnger bogies are not bothered about the engine and they are helping the train to move. I am proud that our leaders are worthless but followers are self motivated. I am proud that with economy we have got a sence of self actualization and thinking about this country. Unless the design of our democracy changes we will move on but at slower pace. I am proud to be part of this struggling country. I love my motherland for sustaining this.

more Atish Vatts Dear Bhupendra,

Mate, its time the journalists also become responsible in the way they present a particular story. Though I do enjoy CNN-IBN coverage,it seems to be more Congress friendly. Why is that you still do not agree that Madam G is all about autocracy, similar to what Mrs. I. Gandhi did a few decades ago? Why dont you highlight the fact that people like Arjun Singh and Ram Vilas Paswan will only push our country a few decades back. How can a country like ours expect a 75 year old man to make educational policies, doesnt that sound a little preposterous. Congress will never let us live in peace, Pratibha Patil will be our biggest shame. She probably will be a bigger shame than Giani Zail Singh.

Its time the news channels stop favouring a particular party and become more accountable and truly respect Article 19 (1)(a). Mate, this country needs responsible journalists. Time to raise your hand and take the onus.

Cheers
