Why is Hindi India's national language?
This question on The Sunday Times of India in its question-answer column called 'Open Space' made me curious enough to find out if the questioner, presumably a young student, has any links... Read The Article
Population explosion is to be blamed for this whole mess. Now you can infer from this logic which linguistic groups are responsible for such unrest. This will be biggest headache for India. What are we today almost 2 billion or more it seems. Whatever happened to Family Planning drive? Politicians are sitting on a timebomb blissfully ignorant of the times to come. We all will end up paying for their selfish designs.

Its so saddening ... -to see non-native people learning foriegn languages like German, French as hobby for months together spending money while caring a damn about the language/culture of their new place. -to see Indians abroad showing-off their foriegn language skills while they a damn for other languages back home. --to conclude that English is more bonding for we Indians than any other language.

my native is oriya, i would like to say about my detest against hindi, you know my language has been ruined/declined due to hindi, currently now i am working in banglore company, i had lot of friends from different states eg from tamilnadu, kanada, kashmir, maharastra, andhra etc whenever peoples from respective states meet they use to talk in their own language, each one have their own identity but when we people like north indians(even people from oriya) meet we use to talk only in hindi, we lost our identity so no one should compel any body to study hindi, since compulsion will create a disgust on that language according to their need it can be studied by their own interest or we shall do onething every indians are ready to study hindi if and if only all muslims converted to hindus, there by we can have one language and one religion also we can reduce the quarrels and disputes to a greater extent, afterwards there will not be any bomb explosion in train, streets, temples, buses i hope and wish the 2nd one should happen

There is only one thing to it.. Hindi if forced upon us will be rejected outright.. if national integration can only be achieved by making hindi the national language..(it is not the national language right now.. this info is for all the ppl who are still under the illusion).. then we do not want national integration.. we are very much aware as what sort of treatment would be metted out to us once this dream of urs becomes true..
We tamilians (and other sensible south indians who still carry love for their mother tongue) love tamil (likewise) and u guys love hindi.. we will respect u as long as u learn to respect us for who we are .. if u rebuke my identity as a tamil.. then dont complain when we treat u the same way.. if u r in the southern belt.. try to learn the local language.. ur value wont go down.. infact u might learn something which u will appreciate for the rest of ur life.. dont expect us to know hindi so that u can feel at home when u come down to tamilnadu.... i mean only a mere 33% of the population of the india can speak hindi.. what happens to the rest 67%... more than 1/4th (2billion) in the world speak chinese.. would u guys agree if we made chinese the world language.. please remove the garbage from ur head.. and learn to respect ppl who are different from urself...
and to all those who dream bout hindi taking over tamilnadu.. no language had ever invaded the south of madurai in the past in more than 5000-6000 odd yrs of existence.. and i dont think this will ever happen... especially a language which has not even a 1000yr history ... so keep dreaming...

Hindi people speaking are generally arrogant and "assume" that Hindi is our National Language. That is not the case. India has 16 or more national languages of equal status as mentioned in the constitution. Hindi has an additional status of being administrative language in the central govt. It doesnt mean Hindi is our national language. All languages have their own beauties and pitfalls. Lets accept diversity.

People in Hyderabad speak Hindi even more than Telugu. I don’t think Andhra Pradesh should be mentioned any where in this article. I am sure more than 90% of Telugu speaking population understand Hindi and respect Hindi.

A language can be considered national language only when it binds a nation. Hindi was never a force that created India. Infact, it was English which helped our national movement and has been the link language between different people accross the country. Giving Hindi a national language status is like say for example uniting India and China into one nation and because more people would then speak mandarin, making it into a national language. It is that ridiculous.

I agree with Mr. Bijoy Shankar Saikia. People may hate or love Hindi, which is more political than anything else,no body can deny the fact that in India there is no language which can replace Hindi. Even one detest calling it the national language it remains the same. Some as in the NE or the far sauth many do understand Hindi yet won't speak it for rigid regionalism and or politics. With the exodus of NRIs Hindi has also reached foreign lands. I had the chance to attend some religious ceremonies organised by people from nonHindi speaking areas. Yet the bhajans or the pooja was in the Hindi language. So it is better the question of language shouldnot be given a political or regional color.
