As of today there are 23 Indian Languages enlisted in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution. Many would be surprised to know that English is not one of those enlisted therein. Merely politicising the issue will not help anyone, least even the politicians.Hindi has already acquired the status of Market Language-- ' YE PYAAS HE BADI '--'THANDA MATLAB COCA COLA "

market language in hindi areas NOT everywhere - the same slogan would be changed in TN :)

THE KEY IS TO CO-EXIST.
Every Indian should be multi-lingual. Just because some of the people from one place hate others or other language doesnot mean that this situation is prevalent or that other start hating these haters. India is the most diverse place on earth and it is upto Indians to show that there is unity in diversity.

I would like to point out that it's not just hindi that is a language which is disliked or ridiculed but every single other language as well.
There are debates on Tamil Vs Hindi, Hindi Vs English, Kannada Vs Tamil in fact any language you name will have it's rivalries. Each of our states is involved in some border dispute with it's neighbours. Be it ethinicity, language, religion or culture we seem to be unable to look beyond our prejudices.
This is not just the so called " illiterate classes" but also the well educated ones. I speak seven Indian Languages fluently and in everyone of them I met people or come across the " we are better than them phenomenon.

Dear All,
All this anti Hindi, language issue has really been blown out of proportionally. Our country is constitutionally incorrect. Why does a country have so to called 18-20 national language and office work being done in English/Hindi in Central Organizations. On the other hand every state works as English/State language. No one understands and just keeps raising a issue, just for the sake of doing one. How the country will be united and progressive if everything is just a hindrance, too many self-drawn lines separating humans. No one is really bothered what are we leaving behind to the next generation. We are just suffocating ourselves with all these useless, ridiculous issues. May God grant us all sense and we stop gruntling, saying that in democracy this is freedom. If the politicians are to blame its only 5%, the rest is me,you and all who never bother to pay back culture to the the very society we have grown. Kudos to our seniors who gave us a great society to live in. But anyone does ever think what are we giving back to the society. We all are nothing but educated bunch of fools and selfish creatures out there. Above all we are the shame, and do not deserve to be rated as humans (there is no humanity, culture, selflessness, sincerity, faithfulness, tolerance and mutual respect). The only thing everyone believes sees and understands is money.. nothing else. I am peeved and a very dis-satisfied lot that society is not evolving and the very culture and traditions we want to preserve are going dead. The only thing that is left the buried ruins of all these things. This is all so pessimistic, but I do not see anything encouraging in the society.

For God's sake, please dont start off these Hindi- Tamil debates. We already have enough divisions in this country in terms of religion, caste etc. Im a tamilian, but I totally endorse Hindi as our National language, simply for the fact that Hindi is more ubiquitious and more widely accepted/spoken. And fellow tamilians, accepting Hindi as our national language doesnt put down Tamil in any sense. The greatness of our language is well known to us and the Government has acknowledged this by giving it the "Classical language" status.
I strongly condemn the statements made by "Tamil Iyer" whos put Tamil over his country, just goes to show how infant his thoughts are. We are Indians first and that should always take precedence over our linguistic predilections.

MANIKANTAN S
ALL LANGUAGES OF INDIA ARE NATIONAL. SO ACCORDING THAT STATUS TO ONLY HINDI, TO THE EXCLUSION OF OTHERS IS A MISTAKE WHICH NEEDS CORRECTION. BUT WHATEVER YOU SAY, HINDI IS THE LANGUAGE ANYONE RESORTS TO SPEAK TO FELLOW INDIANS WHO DO NOT KNOW HIS/HER MOTHER LANGUAGE. HINDI CANNOT BE WISHED AWAY. HINDI IS LIKE CRICKET AND BOLLYWOOD SONGS. IT UNITES INDIA. SO IT SHOULD RIGHTLY BE COINED THE NATIONAL 'LINK' LANGUAGE, BUT NEVER THE SOLE 'NATIONAL LANGUAGE'.
HINDI SHOULD NEVER BE HATED. BUT WE SHOULD NOT TOLERATE ITS IMPOSITION ON NON-HINDI SPEAKING STATES. NO LANGUAGE FOR THAT MATTER SHOULD BE IMPOSED.
AS SOMEBODY HAS CORRECTLY SAID, WE DON'T NEED A SINGLE NATIONAL LANGUAGE. WE CAN DO WITHOUT ONE, JUST WE CAN DO WITHOUT A SINGLE NATIONAL RELIGION. TO FOREIGNERS, WE CAN TELL WE ARE A NATION WITHOUT A NATIONAL LANGUAGE, AS ALL OUR LANGUAGES INCLUDING ENGLISH ARE NATIONAL LANGUAGES FULLY.
WE DON'T NEED ANY SINGLE LANGUAGE TO IDENTIFY OURSELVES WHETHER WE ARE INLAND OR IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY.
We should be Indians first and Indians last. All languages are equally important and have to be preserved and protected, but not by blind patriotism or exclusive rights but by using them liberally and by contributing to their literary growth. No one language is superior to another language. Anybody who loves his language should love his language by all means without hating other languages. He should follow a policy of live and let live.
We should be proud we have so many languages with us but sorry that we know only a few languages to speak.

Only english should be made as INDIA's central government's official language or all the official languages of the states in India .Many North India's live in a dream world saying that Hindi is India's national language .They are too ignorant and arogant to accept that Hindi is a mere official language of Indian central government just like English.many North Indians go to non-hindi states of South India and force the native speakers to learn and converse in hindi. Moreover they are too arrogant to learn the native language of the state to which they migrate. They discrimatethe local people of the state. So official language status of hindi makes the North Indains to think that hindi people and N.Indian people who speak the languages which are kins of hindi are the rulers of India and the South Indians and North East Indians as being ruled.HINI IS NOT A UNITING FACTOR IT IS A DIVIDING FACTOR
