Why is Hindi India's national language?
This question on The Sunday Times of India in its question-answer column called 'Open Space' made me curious enough to find out if the questioner, presumably a young student, has any links... Read The Article

It should be,
MotherTongue+English in Education. If someone has to migrate to other State then his mother tongue should be the State's Language. English should be used as a Official Language and not HINDI.

many of the hindi speakers telling, why south indians has to learn english which is a foreign language? instead of hindi(indian language) then why u people learning english. i like to ask one thing, did hindi speaking people learning only hindi other than else, so u will learn hindi since it's ur mother tongue u will learn englsih for international communication, if i want to become a software engineer means i can prefer only english, since without english we can't survive in it field, if my mother tongue is tamil i can learn tamil and english, if ur mother tongue is hindi means u will learn hindi and english, for u and me want to communicate means we can use english, since both knows english, so there comes problem end. if am i working in a IT company which in chennai(since to survive in chennai i know tamil, to survive in company i know english)in this situation the need of learing hindi is not necessary. due to job transfer if were in any hindi speaking states means i will surely learn hindi(since i am not against hindi)can i compel every indians to worship hindu, due other religions we were always facing lots of problem. so don't try compel hindi, try to love other cultures, there will be nothing harm in learning other languages jaihind

i am a tamil but i will say hindi should be compulsory in schools. my reasoning is simple: even if we consider north indians & south indians are of different race, ethnicity(which is not true) when we need help a hindi-man will come, not an english-man. so learn tamil & hindi

don't compare urself with maharasthra ,bengal and gujrat what u people have done in freedom struggle, most developed states are maharasthra, gujarat and Andhra ,Your people like Karunanidhi, maran just managed to pull few projects in TN by force .otherwise even a kanandiga, telugu or malayalam person is not intersted in TN, allways bothering its nieghbours in kavery, mullaperiyar and Thirupathi, how many Paramveer chakras exept Major Parmeshwaran you people have been awarded.

fore your kind information - the very first strugle for freedom happened in the south - in velore abt 50 years BEFORE the sepoy mutiny of 1857 - Unfortunately because our country is dominated by ignorant people like u - this fact is convinently pushed to the background !

I think Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award in India. Please make a check how many tamils have won. And also check the number of highly skilled scientists we have produced. I feel shame to argue with such barbaric, uncivilized, uneducated northies.
( Posted by Nandha on Friday , January 19, 2007 at 09:02 )
The discussion is going out of track. I am a kannadiga in Chennai. This argument about paying northies by south indians' tax etc. are all useless. We are all Indians. The problem comes when one thinks that one's language is superior. I don't really know whether North Indians think so. But it is true that, expect very few, they never try to learn other languages wherever they are. I think we south indians need not indulge in these arguments at all. Our progress is well known to all.

Sachin
What do you mean by "kannada nationalism" O ignorant one please refer to Karnataka state anthem. The first sentence begins with paying respect to Mother India...unlike our neighbor, Tantrum Nadu's Hindi hatred.
( Posted: Thursday , January 18, 2007 at 18:04 )
To Sachin:
And O brother, how much do you know about Tamil state anthem. Our anthem praises Mother Tamil and there is no hatred for Hindi or Kannada. Our time is too precious to be wasted making refernces to Hindi or Kannada in our Anthem. I see in this discussion the confrontation is squarely between the Hindi mass and my Tamil brothers. I also see a lot of frustrated Kannadigas fuelling the Tamil-Hindi divide. Their frustration stems from the fact that they spinelessly allowed Kannadiga pride and culture (which is very rich too) being usurped and/or destroyed unmercifully by the Hindi onslaught over the centuries. Tamils will do anything to avoid such thing happening to us.
To the Vipins, Anils and Sunils of the world:
For good order sake, just sit calmly and think about how you guys have painted a picture of a guy hailing from the south - in your movies, songs, novels or in any other communicable formats meant for general public. Just try to get the picture in your head. The guy from the south is always portrayed as a weak, nervous, fearful, ugly, irrelevant piece of creature. Isn't he?? Perhaps Idli and Sambar are the only two things you guys talk good of when making reference to the south. If you guys see us spitting venom on anything that is Hindi, it is because of this attitude of yours.
We are Tamils first and Indians next. As said by many of my brothers in this forum we dont need to speak Hindi to demonstrate our patriotic credentials to anyone.

I dont know what are you blabbering about. Before actually working with any south Indian, I had the picture of kamal hasan and hema malini and sridevi and rajnikanth. You dont believe it. Yeah . you wont. Since you are prejudiced. And after working with them I know that they are like just any other Indian. You may have a Ranjith and we a Ranjit but I dont know if that makes much of a differnce. Now after these debates I am coming to know of actuality. I think you guys are pretty stubborn and hatred prone. And I think there are more hindi speaking people touring your places than you guys visiting Jaipur, udaipur, shimla, jamshedpur for sight seeing which shows that how interested they are in your culture.
( Posted by vipin on Friday , January 19, 2007 at 04:42 )
more hindi speaking ppl tour south india bcos, by and large -
1) they will be safer inside the state of TN 2) they will be able to tour south india even without having to know a word in tamil bcos ppl here are friendly, cultured and they dont scare you away. 3) there are more places to see and 4) number of touring north indian ppl is just on the higher side, like the number of rats and crows in this country.
you may consider the opposite of above to be the reason why you dont see many ppl from south touring Jaipur, udaipur, shimla, jamshedpur, jhoomri thalaiya etc..
and read my comment with care. i never asked you to name a few south indian actors that you know of but told you how you guys 'portrayed' a typical tamil guy in your movies.

This article is very good, it is true that the hindi speaking lot is arrogant and never make effort to learn the language of the land. They simply make a dumb statement that it is our national language. It is a sad fact that it is our national language due to stupudity of our great prime minister "Nehru", who was very busy trying to amass wealth that he didnt want to waste time looking at pros and cons. Today Hindi is a bane to the nation as it does not help anybody secure job or a position in a global world. This only adds to draining our tax money as we need to print additionally all the government documents in hindi though it would have helped more people learning and understanding english plus their mother tounge.....

Overthefence
Facts from History
There once existed a country called Soviet Union. It extended from Siberia across to the Europe. It consisted of multiple cultures, Russian, Ukraine, baltic, moslem; each with clear cultural identity and lingual identity. Unfortunately, the Russian rulers believed in creating one nation, where every thing that was not Russian was trampled with military authority. Granted Russia was the largest part.
History tells us that in less than a century the Soviet Union collapsed, because its components refused to bow to Russian arrogance and domination. You may say this was not the only reason; but it was also a strong factor.
Fact: India is a country of as diverse cultures as Soviet Union. We have more ethinic groups and cultures as compared to Soviet Union. We are bound by common heritage and culture that respects each other. And we all love this country, irrespective of our language, ethinicity and relegion. Granted that we feel a strong bonding to our ethinicity and language.
If we decide to change this nature, India would collapse, the same way as Soviet Union. So let there be voices of reason. Let us accept our diversity. Stop abusing other cultures and ethinicity and avoid hateful and denigrating language.
India is on the threshhold of emerging as a major power in the world and all our ethinic groups have contributed. As we move to glory, let us not let down our country in petty squabbles.
To my non Hindi bretherns, I say, let us pardon those who call us names. We will welcome them whether they speak our language or not To my Hindi speaking bretherns, I say, I love this country as much as you do, whether I speak Hindi or not. Accept us for what we are.
Long Live India Long Live Tamil
( Posted: Thursday , January 18, 2007 at 15:20 )
Yes you said it right. Long live our India inspite of all the differences. One of the main reason for the collapse of the Soviet Union was that Moscow micromanaged the entire aspects of the life of their citizen in all their states. Religious and Lingustic difference were not tolerated. Regional states werenot allowed any freedom, to take any decision pertaining to themselves. Ofcourse there are more reasons which will be a thick volume in itself Moreover this is just India debating on this forum we always debate like we are fighting and find a common ground most of the time acceptable to all of us. Inspite of all our difference each one of us hold our country dearly in our hearts. That is the truth.

Since last 5000 years kings came and went,Dynasties ruled and vanished,Countries and states got created and destroyed. But only thing remained were ,culture and language which never got destroyed.Long live Tamil Kannada Malayalam Telugu Konkani
( Posted: Thursday , January 18, 2007 at 14:34 )
Well said Mr.Rajanikanth Every state should retain its identity in terms of its language and culture. We cannot leave our languages to be dominated by English or Hindi. We have our own identity and we shall not lose it at any cost.
