The Hindi Haters

Why is Hindi India's national language? This question on The Sunday Times of India in its question-answer column called 'Open Space' made me curious enough to find out if the questioner, presumably a young student, has any links...

more pk I think CNN-IBN should make this blog as front news instead of talking about Shilpa racial abuse in UK Show. We Indians are so hypocrite, its visible here. After reading the comments on this blog, I am sure Govt should first handle the racism in India on the basis of caste, religion or Langaue as mentioned here by most of the people. We are not mature enough. Thats why we are always ruled by foreigners and will be always ruled. After 50 years still we are not one, then we have no moral to talk about any kind of discrimination in anywhere in world. We are hypocrite that is clearly proven by all the people who have put their comments in this blog. Guys wake up, this false ego that my langauge, my religion, my caste is the best, will not lead us anywhere. better we realise fast or we will be slaves again.

Rajaali The only solution to the problem is every Indian citizen should be made to learn at least two Indian languages. While one has to learn his native tongue there is no justification to ask everyone to learn Hindi and allow the Hindi speakers alone to learn one language. This insistence that Hindi speakers need not compulsorily learn any other language but the non-hindi people should learn Hindi was the root cause for Hindi hating by South and the West added to the fact that the Hindi heartland corners almost 80% of the top posts in UPSC because of this insistence. My father was denied promotion in the army because he was not able to read and write Hindi. What do you expect?
Besides latest reaserches have shown those who are bilingual their brains remain smart and active. Learning more languages keeps one very active. Take me I am equally proficient in Tamil, Hindi, English and Urdu. From experience I know knowing more languages makes one's thinking and communication abilities better. A word which you are nable to express in one language, you can express better in the other.

Kannadiga Dear Friend,
You have made a good point. Hindi is just the official lanugage of the govt. of India and is not the only lanugage of the nation. All the lanugages spoken in India are National Languages. Central Govt. is trying to impose Hindi on non-Hindi Speaking people like Bengalis, Tamlils, Telugus, Kannadigas etc.,

The false status of Hindi beinga a National Lanugage has made Hindi Speaking people think they are superior and they do not respect other Regional Lanugages like Tamil or Kannada. This I have personally experinced. Many North Indians have migrated to Namma Bengaluru and are not learning or respceting Kannada. Whereas other neighbouring state people like Tamils or Telugus give respect to the land they stay. This attitude of showing respect to the lanugage and land where you are staying is not found in the Hindi Speaking people. First let them learn to respect others. If we want to be in India United just respect our lanugage and culture. Otherwise Assam like situation would happen in South India too. Hope the Indian Government understands the seriousness of this.

Karthik And we are intelligent enough to know what is good for us and wat is not.. for eg.. if we have to go to North India we can easily blend in with the crowd.. we will learn hindi and we will achieve better results than you ppl.. but the reverse situation.. when u ppl come down to the south.. u stick out like a sore thumb.. and end up complaining..

the problem is not us.. the problem is u.. ur inability to adapt to situations has led us to hate u.. cos the only other thing u do if u cant adapt is complain.. and when u come to my home-town and complain about it to me.. sorry my friend, i cant take it with a straight face... considering all that goes on in the north these days is either rape or murder or kidnapping or peodophilic activities.. i am not sure why you are so proud of it in the first place...

look at our dear ARR.. he is a tamilian to the core.. he has been the Music Director for many hindi movies.. he has sung beautiful songs in hindi.. and nearly anything he does in hindi is a hit beyond comparision... he has done all this inspite of the blatant racism he has faced in bollywood.. but inspite of all that have any of u ever seen him speak in hindi.. now there lies the intelligence of us South Indians.. can a Northie perform the same feat in South India??? can he be top in a business where he is a minority.. not a chance.. and there lies ur problem..

Understand it.. understanding and accepting is the first step in correcting it.. not pointing fingers at us...

I have said it before.. I will say it again.. India belongs to "Indians" not "Hindians"...

more Shashikiran Why are you pointing out only Karnataka?
In Karnataka now such things are being done as a part of prserving kannada and the culture.

What about TamilNadu where no one studies Hindi and hence they dont know to read and write Hindi.
So do you think they respect it.
They do not respect any other language other than Tamil.

Nandha The language issue will become a big problem if it is not sorted out in time. The sustainability of Integration of India is possible only we accept pluralism. Otherwise it will breakdown.

Some people don“t want to accept the fact that English is the connecting language, practically. I can understand all the feedback of this topic, eventhough the opinions came from different language speaking people.

Hindi is also a regional language. As the government engine is located in hindi speaking region, the central government use Hindi as an official language along with English. There is nothing to do with the people of other regiion regarding Hindi.

Karthik The reason why English is preferred by us South Indians over hindi is number one.. Hindi was forced upon us in the 70's and number two Wat Economic Benefits do I attain if I learn hindi.. answer is NONE... Right now, knowing English is the gateway to better life.. not hindi..

its very simple.. India belongs to "Indians".. not "Hindians"... the problem with a lot of north indians is that u think otherwise... well my dear friends lets not forget that if India was unified under hindi.. there will again be bloodshed .. I for one (though i know hindi well enough to understand it and respect it..) will stand up against it.. and so will all those who love their mother-tongue. The hindi babus will listen to us tamilians specifically, cos if you didnt notice.. DMK is the second largest member in the coalition govt which is ruling us.. and TN is always well represented.. any hint of pro-hindi move by the govt.. then we are moving for elections.. will cost India quite a bit of money.. and we cant afford that..

Making hindi the national language.. forget it.. it wont happen.. I would rather that sanskrit was the national language.. either that or let the chinese invade us and make mandarin or cantonese the national language.. but not hindi..

I am sorry but thats the way it is.. I may not hate hindi.. infact i believe its a beautiful language (lets not compare tamil and hindi.. tamil is genius in itself.. hindi cannot even aspire to reach the greatness of the former.. considering there are no notable literary works in hindi..).. but the hatred which has been created goes deep and most of the northies attitude in the past 50odd yrs has not been very encouraging.. we tamilians do carry grudges specially when someone has harmed our integrity by attacking our language...

and as for this being anti-indian.. would you call APJ Abdul Kalam anti-indian.. he doesnt know hindi.. but today if we are a nuclear power and a military power.. it has to be attributed to him.

Jayesh Bhowmik Under article 343 of the constitution Hindi is the official language along with English. When did Hindi became National Language.

Moreover leading educationists and many intellectuals say that people are more easy with their mothertounge than a allien language. So naturally people who are not from Hindi origin would hate Hindi.

more perian History has taught tamils to be aware of their mother tongue and protect it.In the past when rulers from other regions ruled tamils and their region, languages like telugu, kannada, marathi, sanskrit and urdu flourished by suppressing tamil. Even in united states afro-americans are feeling sad for shifting to english completly and not protecting their mother tongue. they are in an identity crisis often in that country. tamil is life and soul and any one who tries to undermine it will be looked upon with hatred and agony.
