The rise of the tropical modern

When Kareena Kapoor attained "size sero", there were fears of an apocalypse of suicidal dieting among young Indian women. Instead our level-headed behenji brigade (with the exception of a few airheads) said they-and their gentlemen- preferred breasty and curvy instead....

Anitha Very simple and practical thoughts. It has always been like this.I don't understand why Indians have to hype their attitude because the world has begun to recognizing us.

D Really a good one.Enjoyed reading it. We,Indians feel happy that,we have rediscovered our roots and not apologistic about our colour of skin or the way we communicate. The world is coming calling and you no more need to fake your accent. We are proud of our achievements and are happy to ogle at the ample bosom at display with a convenient sari.

ABC I recently visited India after a gap of a few years and was surprised to see that in the zeal to copy the West, India has in fact surpassed the West. The way I like to put it is: India has become more American than America. Doing things the way others around the world do is not a shame but while doing so, deriding others who don't feel the same is wrong. When ever I visit India, I make it a point to converse in as much Hindi as possible. However, what I found this time around was that there was a significant number of people around me who just wanted to speak in English. No problem. But at least don't make the people speaking Hindi feel like they are some damned fools who by virtue of their preference of speaking Hindi are illiterate, uncultured fools. Only if they knew any better.

I completely agree with the spirit of the article that mixing the western culture with our own has given rise to a totally new "tropical modern" culture. The only problem is that because of years of living in a culture that subdued luxury and promoted show-off, mixing it with a culture that thrives on luxury mixed with common sense is not happening in the best possible manner.

anu Dear M'am,this article is really a pick.i really like the line in which you write"you can take us out of India but not India out of us". I'm proud to say that I'm of those young Indians who prefers eating a gol-guppa at the pani puri thela.......India really rocks!!!!!!!!!!!

Abhinav Agrawal Sagarika your article beautifully describes how we Indians have changed with our modern times. But what baffles me is the fact that we did not realise the beauty of our culture until hippies made us realise. Why do we need an approval by West for things that are ours?
