The rise of the tropical modern

When Kareena Kapoor attained "size sero", there were fears of an apocalypse of suicidal dieting among young Indian women. Instead our level-headed behenji brigade (with the exception of a few airheads) said they-and their gentlemen- preferred breasty and curvy instead....

ottawamysteryman Sagarika, thoughtful article. By the way, I watch 'Face the Nation' from Canada, and I think you do a great job. Also, you look really elegant in a sari.

Panther very nice read - simple article & great observations & comparisions. However, i did not like "are sari clad but calm in the face of divorce" & that thing about Indians re-discovering yoga through hippies & westerners. That is completely wrong.

Brihanmumbai What are you babbling about?? I just can't seem to get whats with this new found sense of importance. All of a sudden has India become the cynosure of the world? Please, a seasoned journalist like you can do better than that.
Please look beyond this "India Shining" or "Rising India" crap and look at the hard truth of daily existence that most Indians (as does most of the world) have to face...........and please, people do read your blog, so kindly do a better job.

Siva like with most of your articles, this also comes across as a no-brainer.. "We rediscovered yoga thru Hollywood celebrities and hippies", you must have discovered that thru them because those are the guys you look up to.. most people in rural india doesnt know any hollywood actors or hippies, but dont they know yoga, or there are no local teachers of Yoga?? "Elizabeth Hurley approves Sari".. wow, you saw a snap of her wearing a sari to appease her new found husband's relatives and you say she is bowled over by this, does she wear them everybody continuosly now?? You really cant think like an Indian, you have no idea how people live, no I am not speaking some guy in some remote village, even in cities, the values, the increasing exposure of their bodies by women, is done only 5% of rich Indians, who rarely care about our society or do something for it. Lastly, if looking up to west and copying them is your idea to modernity, then I wish we never be modern

Abhishek Gaur Dear Ghose,

I love the way you have presented the modern indian society.Indians are everywhere around the world and this is getting reflected in our society also.We are nolonger isolated from the outside world, even the Bollywood is having tie ups with the Hollywood.

Prasad SATYAJIT Satkalmi Well! I am not sure what you want to tell exactly. Do you read? Have you been out of India? I am sure you do. But you are genuinely unaware of the situation. You and many more journalists talk about Indian and post- independence India is like imposing your own personal views over the masses or just match them with few metro-mentalities. Infact, you must and you should visit the real India in the rural regions. It is still the same. Nothing has changed so far. And to your kind information, even the metro cities of India are since last 5 years facing that not even poor countries of African subcontinent face. Zonal rivalry, Reservation anarchy, Uncontrollable inflation, pseudo-American slavery, terror and religious rebels, indebtedness to plastic money in the race of show off and to achieve more and more. INDIAN-NESS is left with people like you to earn bread and butter. In fact, today's Indian does not even have time to think about what is actually happening next door. He / She is just concerned about whether (s)he will be able to run the household for one month or not. DUNIYA BAAD MEI JEETO, PAHLE APNE LOGGO KA VISHWAAS TO JEETO.
