To pardon Sanjay Dutt is to imprison justice

In our time, prison is no longer the earthly equivalent of Purgatory, the ecclesiastical transit station between Heaven and Hell that allowed sinners an opportunity to repent. It is now more of a sympathy sink for celebrities - a rehab...

Rajesh Who knows Munnabhai and Gandhigiri was not a part of a clearly written political drama...

Sanjay Urs alleged terrorist links, possessing illegal weapons and attempting to destroy the evidence? This is what our guest writer has to say, i am asking again the unanswered question, please make this judgement implemented across the nation. 70% of Bihar own illegal weapons, most of them attempt destroying the evidence day in day out, terrorist links, i seriously dont know may be / may not be, why dont you arrest all of them. Judiciary is equal to one and all and when the judgement says that, why dont we move forward to prosecute all those people who carry weapons in an open society in Bihar. Please answer.

Pallavi Bhardwaj Well written! I couldnt agree more with Bijoy.

Infact when the charges of TADA were dropped against him, this news swept across all the news channels 'Sanjay Dutt relieved by court'. 'Sirf Munna not a bhai' '13 saal ka vanvaas khatam''although found guilty for possession of armory, Sanjay can breath sigh of relief as all the TADA charges against him are withdrawn'

Then many personalities like Salman Khan said 'He is a good person. We knew he will come out clean'. Mr Big B said "Dutt's family and our family have relations for years he's a good kid. He is like elder brother to Abhishek". His sister Priya Dutt said "we can sleep well tonight. It's a great relief"

So now when he is getting punishment for the crime which he has done, why create such a scene? Sure Sanjay Dutt has a daughter; Sure he did not do any terrorist activity..Sure he went to all the temples; Sure he did a lot of Gandhigiri and ..though possessing an AK47 might be considered too elementary in terrorist community, but its a crime and demands a punishment.

Rajeev Great post there Bijoy.

Next - Salman for drunken driving and killing a few innocent people.

Why is that man not in prison today?

more INTENSIVEKS U are quite right BIJOY VENUGOPAL!

Justice in India is a merry-go-round. But in the end the wheels of Justice do their bit and men like Sanjay Dutt are caught in its throes.

To escape Punishment for wrong-doing simply becoz of "time-lapse" is to try to take refuge in "wishful thinking"...such fantasy happens only in REEL LIFE.

Does SD want to state that he has been a "good man" ever since those Terror Blasts and therefore should be exonerated?

In that case he should have gone "underground" to escape the reality.

Does he realise the enormity of his sins? Innocent victims by the thousands have bled to death in those Terror serial blasts. And SD has been a part and parcel of the machinations of the Terrorists. He was a wilfull partner in that dastardly crime. That he did not wield the AK56 to shoot people is another question. He did not surrender on his own...he was brought to Justice by the able Police Force headed by Mr.AS SAMRA. SD was "tracked down" by corroborating evidence...by witnesses...by sheer CID work of the cops.

Would he have willingly admitted his crime then and there?

Chances are he wouldn't have succumbed to the temptation of admission of guilt like the Mahatma Gandhi he has been portraying for the last 9 years....in honour of TRUTH!

Ravi Shekhar S. I agree with the guest blogger. I also agree with Mr. Sardesai and others who debated that the politician belonging to Shiv Sena -- Mr. Sarpotdar must also be held accountable for unlawfully carrying a weapon.

But, that unauthorised weapon was allegedly a .32 calibre revolver! Ain't there any distinction between a teeny-weeny revolver and a automatic machine gun?

Did Mr. Dutt plan to take on the whole horde of rioters with that weapon!?

mina Well said sir. The law must not look at who is the offender. The infamous bollywood statue with a lady blindfolded is there to remind everyone that no one is special under a law.

Palz i cudnt agree with you more & let me state "am not a sanjay dutt fan". he is like any other celebrity who i cudnt care less about.his sentence does send a message to other celebrities (or so i hope!) who are involved in such activities.yet i cant get myself to say that justice has been delivered...not knowing the nuances of law,i cant say much but this that i would rather see community service (as "rigrous" as the jail term!) being the sentence than god-knows-how-much money wasted on the trial.

Sundara Rajan S Excellent article. Exhibits a rare quality - sanity- amidst all the media whipped up frenzy. It is disgusting to see all the reasons being given to pardon Sanjay. It is pathetic that these jerks dont care a damn for the victims. I hope and pray that Dutt is made to pay for his sins. I hope that Supreme court -the beacon of hope for ordinary Indians for me - does what it does best i.e to put an end to such nonsense. Contempt proceedings should be initiated against all those campaigning for his pardon/release.
