jaswanti Both the brothers are jewels of Mysore.More so of the country.I was fortunate to meet both of them and the awe i had for them was justified. The house Mr.R.K.Narayan lived in should be converted as a museum with all his books and memorablia of this genius of a man who took Mysore on the global map with his Malgudi Days. They will remain ever green in the hearts of every Indian.

Suhas R K Laxman epitomised India for decades through his COMMON MAN, who has seen it all........from the birth of the Indian republic to the present day US elections. Nothing escaped the attention of the common man......be it the stock scam or the IT Revolution; The politicians's foreign tour or the Sensex graph, day after day the common man has not only brought a smile under the nose of emerging India, but also made us think about our culture, behaviour, etc. It is this work which rightly deserved him the highest accolades at any level. May god bless this common man with health wealth prosperity and all what he needs......Because, if the common man smiles, then the most happiest person would be none, but me you and the one billion odd Indians. After all, he represents the you me and him.

more vishrant you criticie NYT for highlighting naraynan's caste.
according to you caste should not be part of a person's identity. and i agree.

your article starts with "who is the greatest mysorean"
you are accepting being mysorean as a part of identity.

you too are in the same leauge. with caste people. they make caste a part of a persons identity. you make a city the part of a persons identity.

neither they are ready to accept a person just for what he is and nor you.

you are against caste becasue that's fashion.

subramanian It's a good article on the brothers. While the author is not happy about the mention by NYT about his caste, i dont find any reason why 'Mysore', 'Mysoreans' appear several times in this article. Without that i feel the article talks about people who make every indian proud. Now it's as if only 'Mysoreans' can be proud of them

D P Bhatt Dear Editor,

India should provide for the states that collect tax for the center, atleast 1/3rd should be spent in that state enabling the tax payers to benefit from the fruits of progress. Presently the politicians apply budgeted amounts to their own constitutes to ensure their vote bank - only 10% should be applied this way and atleast 1/3rd to the Defence and 20% to the 5 year plan.

This is the only way all the states in India will welcome the business and industry and will not throw out the new comers who are contributing the exonomy of that state not only directly but also budgeted amounts being spent for development of that state by center.
Best Regards - D P Bhatt

Gundkal A very nice headline! Thanks for the nice piece on Laxman. He is an outstanding cartoonist with great illustration skills. I would have appreciated it more if you have given more insights on his cartoons. Laxman wrote some brilliant cartoons in late 60s, early 70s, especially on Indira Gandhi government.

Pramod Satish you definitely got this right, R K Narayan and R K Laxman - the two greatest Mysoreans, arguably the best from Karnataka post independence. CNN IBN did a fantastic job by honoring R K Laxman, the brothers truly deserve the highest civilian award - The Bharath Ratna. The way they represented the common man is really amazing and I hope that Govt. of India will confer them with Bharath Ratna
