Will the small people ever move the two big nations?

Ismatullah Jami hates tears, emotions and Kashmir's extensive hospitality. He calls them Satan's inventions. Today, as he clung hesitantly onto the state's unkempt green and white bus, his face is deadpan and voice shallow. His younger brother Afaq runs his...

Asma Well we just hope that theres a definite solution to the kashmir issue so that we dont have any more families divided or loved ones seperated .

It seems neither India nor Pakistan are interested in ending the ongoing conflict and the even our own leadership in kashmir is faltering .

more Anis Mr Jami is one of those few lucky ones who have been able to see their loved ones at least once in a life time. People like us have even forgotten to mourn those died across 'the line of ill feelings'. It is tragic that we were brought up with our first cousins together in our own house in Kolkata. They left for Dhaka, then East Pakistan, in 1965, I was in the midst of my higher secondary exams. I could barely go to see them off at Sealdah station in March 1965 because of exams. I can never forget that day how tears flowed down our cheeks.

That was the last we saw them. They settled in Dhaka and flourished in their business. In 1970 Pakistani army destroyed their properties & businesses because they were Bengalis. In 1971 they were driven away by liberating Bangladeshis who called them Biharis - a misnomer for all those who went from India.

They finally ended up in Karachi and are just eking out a livelihood there, totally tired of living. We just remained mesmerised and kept our eyes glued to their movements. Their mother died a few year back - we did not lose a tear. Eldest cousin died and we lost no sleep. One cousin lost her husband nothing mattered to us. My mother died recently, we informed them over phone, I could barely hear my eldest living cousin just cry once. Soon we will be gone too and that will be the end of the 'line of control' for us. Jamis are lucky, indeed. Let them see their lost loved ones some more time. They have our good wishes.
