Brathwaite, Baugh dropped for Eng tour

Denesh Ramdin replaced Baugh, and Marlon Samuels has been recalled after a three-week stint in the IPL.

Roseau: Opener Kraigg Brathwaite and wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh were dropped from the West Indies squad on Friday for the 11-match tour of England starting next week. Denesh Ramdin replaced Baugh, and Marlon Samuels was recalled after a three-week stint in the Indian Premier League, during which he missed the lost home Test series against Australia.

The only new cap in the 15-man squad was Trinidad fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, who took 24 wickets in the regional four-day championship in February and March. Clyde Butts, West Indies chairman of selectors, believed the spring conditions in England would suit Gabriel more than a spinner such as Devendra Bishoo, who met Australia only in the first Test and took one wicket.

Bishoo would benefit from regaining confidence playing for West Indies A when India A visit in June, Butts said, as would Brathwaite. "Baugh has been good behind the stumps, but his batting has not quite lived up to expectations, hence the selection of Ramdin," Butts added.

West Indies starts with a three-day match against Sussex on May 5. There will be three Tests at Lord's, Trent Bridge and Edgbaston, three one-day internationals, finishing with a Twenty20 on June 24 in Nottingham.

West Indies: Darren Sammy (captain), Kirk Edwards, Adrian Barath, Darren Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Fidel Edwards, Assad Fudadin, Shannon Gabriel, Kieran Powell, Kemar Roach, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Marlon Samuels, Shane Shillingford.
