Jayawardene hits 56 not out as Delhi beat Punjab by five wickets to become the first team to qualify for the playoffs.
Delhi Daredevils innings:
19th over: Delhi 140 for 5 Azhar Mahood to bowl the over. Pathan gets the strike after Jayawardene takes a single off the second. Pathan takes a single and Jayawardene hits a four through the covers. All elegance, along the ground. Another four. This time on the leg side. With this he completes his fifty. What an innings, under demanding circumstances. He closes out the match with another four. Delhi become the first team to qualify for the play-offs. It is their 10th win in 14 matches.
18th over: Delhi 126 for 5 Awana returns. He has got a lot of purchase off the pitch so far. Let us see whether he can do it again. Irfan Pathan has other ideas. Takes a four off the third ball. A double off the next. Good over so far the hosts. Another four. This time over covers, one bounce four. Irfan is turning it on. Another four. Poor ball. Irfan flicks it off his pads to the square leg boundary. 15 runs from over.
17th over: Delhi 111 for 5 Praveen Kumar returns. Jayawardene hits a four off the third delivery. An excellent pull shot. Eight runs from the over. The match is on. As long as Jayawardene is there, Delhi fans will feel good.
16th over: Delhi 103 for 5 Chawla is into his last over. Can he take another wicket? A huge lbw appeal against Jayawardene. The umpire says no. A maiden over. Unbelievable. What a time to bowl a maiden! Super.
15th over: Delhi 103 for 5 Harmeet Singh back on. Eight runs off the over.
14th over: Delhi 95 for 5 Chawla returns. Can he make amends for his dropped catch? Does not look like it as Jayawardene plays a delightful stroke through the covers for a four. Hang on. Chawla makes his detractors eat apple as Naman Ojha goes out. A long hop but Ojha holes out to Mandeep Singh at the deep square leg boundary.
Ojha c Mandeep Singh b Chawla 34 (29)
13th over: Delhi 88 for 4 Mahmood replaces Chawla. Ojha is dropped by Chawla at long-on. A big let-off. Mahmood is livid. And Jayawardene adds insult to injury with a boundary off the next ball, the fifth of the over.
12th over: Delhi 82 for 4 Harmeet Singh continues and Ojha continues his heroics. Hits the second ball over covers for a once bounce four. The penultimate ball yields another four as it races to four runs after a thick edge off Ojha's bat.
11th over: Delhi 70 for 4 Chawla continues. Naman Ojha puts him to the sword. Hits two consecutive sixes. One over long-on, the other is hit straight back over the bowler's head. Just the over Delhi needed. 15 runs off the over.
10th over: Delhi 55 for 4 Harmeet Singh, who replaced Chitnis for this match, comes into bowl. Does a good job, gives away just two runs.
9th over: Delhi 53 for 4 Chawla comes into bowl. Good over for the hosts as Jayawardene and Ojha fetch a four each. Nine runs from the over.
8th over: Delhi 42 for 4 Awana continues. Another brilliant over by him. Just three runs off it.
7th over: Delhi 39 for 4 Praveen Kumar replaces Mahmood. Bowls a tight over. Just two runs off it. Jayawardene and Ojha have a big job on their hands.
6th over: Delhi 37 for 4 Venugopal Rao out. Another wicket. Ross Taylor out. Both batsmen edge it straight through to the keeper Saini. Brilliant seam bowling by Parvinder Awana. He has really turned the tables. Who would have thought that Delhi would make heavy weather of a modest chase?
Taylor c †Saini b Awana 0 (2)
Venugopal Rao c †Saini b Awana 7 (7)
5th over: Delhi 36 for 2 Mahmood replaces Kumar. All of a sudden the Punjab players have become quite chirpy. There is now a window of hope for them after Sehwag's departure. David Hussey, who dropped the Delhi captain in the third over, must be the happiest soul in the ground.
4th over: Delhi 32 for 2 Awana cleans up Virender Sehwag off the first ball. A peach of a delivery. Jayawardene is the next man in and opens his account with a four past point.
Sehwag b Awana 8 (9)
3rd over: Delhi 28 for 1 Warner out in a awkward fashion. The ball from Praveen Kumar is a bit short and Warner in a moment of hesitation skies it in the air. Mahmood takes an easy catch at short cover. Virender Sehwag is dropped off the fifth ball. Guess who is the culprit? It's Punjab captain David Hussey at short midwicket.
Warner c Azhar Mahmood b Kumar 14 (8)
2nd over: Delhi 21 for 0 Azhar Mahmood to bowl and Warner welcomes him with a four off the second ball. The shot goes like a tracer bullet, past point. Another four. The ball is short and Warner plays it awkwardly but gets enough chunk of the bat as it races through fine-leg.
1st over: Delhi 11 for 0 Praveen Kumar opens the bowling for Punjab. David Warner is on strike. Expect some fireworks. Hits the second ball for a four through the covers. A single off the next and Sehwag gets the strike. An lbw appeal against the Delhi captain straight away but the ball seems to be missing the off-stump. The umpire says no. The ball is keeping low a bit. This time Sehwag does what he is known for. A big six over deep mid-wicket. Just a flick off the pads. With that concludes the over.
Kings XI Punjab innings:
20th over: Punjab 136 for 8 Aaron to bowl the last over. Awana takes a single off the first ball. Hussey goes for a big shot off his first ball of the over but his execution is poor. He refuses to take the single. Ironically, off the next ball he takes a single after another ineffective hit. Awana gets another single. It's been a over of singles, it seems. Yet another single. Let's see whether Awana could break the monotony off the last delivery. No. five singles from the over. Hussey remains unbeaten on 40. Take his runs out and Punjab would find themselves in doldrums. Not that 138 is any big.
19th over: Punjab 131 for 8 Kumar run-out. Varun Aaron hits the stumps directly from extra cover. It was Hussey's call but Kumar did not run as fast as he should have. Pays the price. Meanwhile, Hussey fetches a four, through the covers.
Kumar run out 8 (5)
18th over: Punjab 126 for 7 Umesh Yadav takes his third wicket, sends back Piyush Chawla, who tries to cut but finds an edge and wicketkeeper Ojha dives towards his left to complete a good catch. Praveen Kumar is the next man in and takes a double off the first ball. Taylor fields poorly at the point boundary. Another four for Praveen off the fifth ball. Makes room for himself as he tries to cut but the sails over the slips for a four. May not be an attractive shout but certainly effective.
Chawla c †Ojha b Yadav 10 (14)
17th over: Punjab 106 for 6 Morkel comes back into the attack. Bowls a decent over until the last ball which is smacked by David Hussey for a six. It sails over long-on.
16th over: Punjab 106 for 6 Irfan Pathan continues. Finishes his spell with figures of 0 for 24. Quite economical.
15th over: Punjab 99 for 6 Varun Aaron returns and keeps Hussey and Chawla in check. Just two off the over.
14th over: Punjab 96 for 6 Irfan Pathan returns and does a good job. Just seven off the over. The visitors need something around 150 to really pose some kind of threat to this mighty Delhi batting line-up.
13th over: Punjab 89 for 6 Last-match hero Gurkeerat Singh joins Hussey and is out stumped off Negi's penultimate ball. After hitting a four, tries to cut the next ball and loses his balance. An alert Naman Ojha does the rest.
12th over: Punjab 80 for 5 Umesh Yadav continues. Mahmood tries to hit him over long-on. Luckily for him, it falls in no-man's land. Mahmood corrects himself off the next ball, hits a four through deep midwicket. Out! One shot too many for him. Pathan takes an easy catch at long-off.
Azhar Mahmood c Pathan b Yadav 9 (7)
11th over: Punjab 72 for 4 Negi replaces Ifan Pathan. Mahmood survives a close run-out. Had Sehwag's throw from short fine leg been direct, the Pakistani allrounder would have fallen short. Meanwhile, Hussey ends the over on a good note with a four.
10th over: Punjab 64 for 4 Miller run-out. Negi smashes the stumps at the non-striker's end from long-on and he way out. Superb stuff. The strategic time out has done the visitors no good, it seems.
Miller run out 4 (7)
9th over: Punjab 62 for 3 Irfan Pathan returns only to be hit for a four by David Hussey off the first ball. This is Sehwag's 50th match as Delhi captain. He is the fifth to do so. Pathan does well over the next five balls. Six runs off the over.
8th over: Punjab 56 for 3 Umesh Yadav strikes in his first over. Saini out. The ball is a bit on the short side, takes the edge of Saini's bat and Sehwag takes a low catch in the slips.
Saini c Sehwag b Yadav 15 (15)
7th over: Punjab 54 for 2 Pawan Negi replaces comes in to bowl. Good over. David Hussey and Saini take seven runs off it.
6th over: Punjab 47 for 2 Aaron continues and Nitin Saini greets him with a four. Plays it off his pads. Aaron is clocking some really good pace. Around 145 kmph. Mandeep out. His pull shot goes straight through to captain Sehwag at short midwicket.
Mandeep Singh c Sehwag b Aaron 21 (12)
5th over: Punjab 38 for 1 Mandeep puts Morkel to the sword. Takes three boundaries off the over.
4th over: Punjab 26 for 1 Varun Aaron strikes off his first ball. The ball is on the leg stump and takes Marsh's bat's edge and goes straight back to the wicketkeeper. A run-out appeal against Mandeep off the fifth ball but replays show he is well in. Good over. Just two off it with the reward of a wicket.
Marsh c †Ojha b Aaron 13 (15)
3rd over: Punjab 24 for 0 Morne Morkel, the Purple Cap holder, begins the over and is on the money from the word go. A huge lbw appeal against Marsh off the fifth ball. The umpire wags his head, says no. And here is
insult to injury, Mandeep flicks the last ball off his pads for a four. It was in the air for a while and just escaped the hands of the fielder at short square leg.
2nd over: Punjab 19 for 0 Venugopal Rao to bowl the over. It's a surprising move. And Marsh gets two fours off the first three balls. Both through the covers. Here comes another boundary off the penultimate ball, this time past point. The last delivery yields a single. Good over for the visitors. Marsh has been off-colour so far in this tournament, who knows this might be his match.
1st over: Punjab 6 for 0 Irfan Pathan opens the proceedings for Delhi against in-form Mandeep Singh and Shaun Marsh. A good over until the last ball. It's too short and Mandeep pulls it for a four.
7.30 pm: Punjab win toss, will bat first. Two changes for Punjab: David Miller comes in place of Ryan Harris, Harmeet replaces Chitnis. Delhi also go in with a couple of changes. van der Merwe and Nagar go out as Taylor and Negi return. The teams will be out in a while.
