The defending IPL champions are believed to be targeting the three internationals at Sunday's auction in Chennai.
New Delhi: The current IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders have their sights on signing Darren Sammy, Vernon Philander and Akila Dananjaya at Sunday's IPL 6 auction in Chennai, Cricketnext has learned.
Though the main focus of the auction will be on Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting, KKR are looking to pick players who will lend balance and value to the team. KKR have Brett Lee as their premier fast bowler but according to a source close to the team, the Australian's age has forced the KKR management to look at Philander as an ideal replacement in case of injuries of poor form. Philander - who plays for South African Twenty20 team Cape Cobras - is in very good form and picked up seven wickets against New Zealand in his previous Test.
As far as Dananjay is concerned, the KKR management believes the rookie Sri Lankan offspinner will be a perfect foil for Sunil Narine. "Dananjay was pretty impressive in the ICC World Twenty20 and his presence will boost to the spin department with the company of Narine," said the source.
Sammy led West Indies to the World T20 title in 2012 and is widely respected among his team-mates for his all-round capabilities and inspirational leadership. "Sammy is a utility T20 cricketer and a very good team man. He can blast quick runs and varies his pace nicely which comes in handy on the slower pitches of India," said the source.
