Glenn Maxwell is batting like never before and has put up a spectacle in his three innings so far in IPL 7, and if reports are to be believed, Australia coach Darren Lehmann may have lit a fire under him.

The young Aussie, playing for Kings XI Punjab this season, has singed opponents with innings of 95, 89 and 95 at a strike rate of over 200. Such dominance has made Mumbai Indians, who didn't show interest in him at the 2014 players' auction, rue their inexplicable mistake - while Punjab carry a sly smile around the UAE.

Punjab paid a huge $1.06 million for Maxwell, but he has been worth each of those dollars and may take Punjab all the way to their maiden IPL title. But what has transformed Maxwell? According to, it's the words of his national coach Lehmann.

Maxwell hasn't succeeded for Australia as well as Lehmann would have liked. While he has shown promise, he hasn't delivered according to that when playing for his country, which led to Lehmann coming out with some hard words.

"Maxwell has to finish those games off for us. He is a batting allrounder but has to show the responsibility to bat at No. 6. We know he has the flair and excitement, and love that about him, but we want him to understand the game better," the coach said.

Those words may have fired Maxwell up and it showed in the career-best 74 he scored against Pakistan in Australia's otherwise dismal performance at the recently concluded ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.

Before coming to Punjab this season, Maxwell was mostly benched by Mumbai in 2013 and Delhi Daredevils in 2012, for whom he played just three and two games respectively.

But not this time, after being the Man of the Match in Punjab's all three games in IPL 7 so far.
