Rajasthan Royals leg-spinner Pravin Tambe got a rare two-ball hat-trick to become only the second player in the history of IPL to do so.
Royals' opponent Kolkata Knight Riders achieved the ignominy of becoming the first team in the history of IPL who lost a match having conjured a 100-run opening partnership during the chase.
Tambe got the hat-trick in the 16th over. The first delivery adjudged wide as the googly spun enough to beat an advancing Manish Pandey as he was stumped by Sanju Samson.
With his first legal delivery, he got Yusuf Pathan (0) and Ryan ten Doeschate (0) was done in by a flipper. However, this is the second time that a bowler in T20 cricket has taken a hat-trick in two legal deliveries.
Sri Lankan left-arm seamer Isuru Udana was the first among equals as he got three with two legal deliveries playing for Wayamba against Central Districts during a 2010 Champions League T20 match in Port Elizabeth.
While batting, KKR scored 121 for the opening stand and with only 50 runs to get, disaster struck as they lost six wickets for two runs and never recovered from that.
Here's how Tambe scripted Kolkata's downfall in the 15th over of their run-chase:
15.1 P Tambe to M Pandey, OUT! Kolkata are on the mat! Bowls it down the leg side, Pandey comes down the wicket to tuck it to the on side but misses. The keeper does the rest and suddenly Kolkata have lost 4 wickets in 6 balls! Much needed TIMEOUT for Kolkata! 123/4
15.1 P Tambe to Y Pathan, OUT! TWO IN TWO! Fuller on off, Pathan just chips it back to the bowler who takes a good return catch. He was trying to turn it to the on side but he got a leading edge back to the bowler. What a turn around this! 123/5
15.2 P Tambe to ten Doeschate, OUT! Tambe gets Jaipur team a hat-trick! Bowls it on middle, Doeschate is beaten all ends up as he fails to keep it out. The ball hits him in front of the stumps. The players appeal and the umpire rules him out. Tambe roars! 123/6
15.3 P Tambe to S Yadav, Bowls it on off, Yadav defends it. 123/6
15.4 P Tambe to S Yadav, Turned through the on side for a single. 124/6
15.5 P Tambe to Al Hasan, Played to mid-wicket for a single. 125/6
15.6 P Tambe to S Yadav, Yadav drives this one to mid off for a single. Phew, what an over that! 126/6
