    Luke Pomersbach detained for molestation

New Delhi: Luke Pomersbach, the Australia batsman representing Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL, has been detained in the capital on charges of molestation. Following reports that he allegedly misbehaved with a woman at an after-match party at a Delhi five-star hotel and then beat up her husband, Pomersbach was taken to Primus hospital for a medical examination.

An official statement from the Delhi Police said, "A US national, staying at Hotel Maurya, was molested by Luke Pomersbach, an Australian player of RCB, when they were partying in her room. When her fiance Sahil intervened, he too was boxed by Luke. A case under Sections 354, 323, 454 and 511 IPC [has been] registered at PS Chanakya Puri."

Reacting to the incident, IPL chief Rajiv Shukla said, "IPL is not responsible for a player's behaviour. There was no official party hosted by the IPL. It's the behaviour of an individual; let the police handle it."

When asked what action will be taken against Pomersbach, Shukla said, "We will wait for the report from the police and then react."

The 27-year-old has a history of transgressions. In August 2009 he was suspended by Western Australia when he avoided a jail sentence after admitting to assaulting a police officer who was trying to arrest him for drunken driving. Unhappy with Pomersbach's behaviour, earlier in 2009, he had been suspended and fined after failing to show up for a club match. The then Western Australia (WA) coach Tom Moody had said it was his last chance. Pomersbach escaped a jail sentence but was banned by WA until the end of the 2010-11 season.

In 2007, he and Shaun Marsh had also been suspended indefinitely after a late-night drinking session before a domestic match. In September 2011, he stepped down from all domestic cricket duties as he battled depression. He had joined RCB ahead of IPL 5 and expressed his pleasure at being able to return to cricket.

Pomersbach has played one Twenty20 for Australia, against New Zealand in Perth in December 2007.
