NZ aim for series clinching victory

New Zealand lead the three match ODI series against Zimbabwe 1-0.

Harare: New Zealand who seem to be competing at a different level against the hapless Zimbabweans, would be looking to clinch the one day series, when the two teams go head to head in the second of three one-dayers in Harare on Saturday.

Having beaten Zimbabwe convincingly in the two Twenty20s, and the first ODI on Thursday, the Kiwis would to be going all out to settle the issue in their favour, before the third and final match of the series in Bulawayo, on Tuesday.

Earlier, opener Rob Nicol hit 108 not out on debut on Thursday as New Zealand continued to dominate on its tour of Zimbabwe with a crushing nine-wicket win in the first one-day international.

Nicol led New Zealand's comfortable chase as the touring side overhauled Zimbabwe's 231-6 with the loss of just one wicket — Martin Guptill for 74.

The right-handed Nicol, who plays domestic cricket in Zimbabwe, hit 11 fours and shared a 153-run opening stand with Guptill as New Zealand cruised to 232-1 and won with more than six overs to spare.

Brendon McCullum made 39 not out off 35 balls at No. 3 to bring a swift conclusion to the one-sided match. The 28-year-old Nicol became the seventh player to make 100 on his one-day debut.

Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor's own unbeaten hundred was in vain. Taylor crashed seven fours and five sixes in his 128 not out — his fifth one-day century — to give Zimbabwe a chance after it had slumped to 21-4 in the 11th over.

But his only support was from wicketkeeper-batsman Forster Mutizwa, who made 69 in a partnership of 156 with his skipper. All the other Zimbabwe batsmen failed to reach double figures.

New Zealand allrounder Doug Bracewell had 3-55, also on his ODI debut, to put New Zealand on top early as he dismissed the home team's top three with just 12 runs on the board. James Franklin supported with 2-37 and Andy McKay returned with figures of 1-36.
