The 27-year-old Devcich is the only uncapped player in the squad that will play a three-match ODI series and a solitary Twenty20 international.
New Zealand on Tuesday announced a 15-member limited-overs squad for the tour of Bangladesh next month, and the selectors decided to include uncapped opening batsman Anton Devcich to the touring party.
The 27-year-old Devcich is the only uncapped player in the squad that will play a three-match ODI series and a solitary Twenty20 international. Since Martin Guptill's broken finger made him ineligible for selection, Devcich is expected to open batting with Hamish Rutherford.
The noticeable omissions from the squad were wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi and allrounder James Franklin, while fast bowler Adam Milne and allrounder Jimmy Neesham have been recalled. Veteran left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori was not considered since he is nursing an Achilles tendon injury. Also coming back into the squad is pacer Tim Southee, who was left out of the Test squad announced earlier due to ankle surgery.
Devcich grabbed selectors' attention with his maiden first-class century during the New Zealand A tour of India earlier this month. He plays for Northern Districts in the New Zealand domestic circuit.
"Anton showed very good signs against England last season for New Zealand A and has transitioned from a middle order batsman to an aggressive top order player," Bruce Edgar, the general manager of national selection, said. "He is also an outstanding fielder with the ability to contribute as a left-arm spin bowling option, which will be useful in the sub-continent."
Limited-overs squad: Brendon McCullum (capt), Corey Anderson, Anton Devcich, Grant Elliott, Tom Latham, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, Jimmy Neesham, Hamish Rutherford, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson.
