    Ponting crosses 13,000 Test runs

    Ricky Ponting has become the third batsman to score 13,000 Test runs.

    Adelaide: Australia's Ricky Ponting has become the third batsman to 13,000 Test runs after achieving the record on the first day of the fourth Test against India in Adelaide. Ponting, who is playing his 162nd Test, started the match needing 81 to reach the milestone and achieved it with a sweep past square leg for a single off R Ashwin.

    The appreciate Adelaide Oval crowd applauded Ponting's effort as he completed the run and Ponting acknowledged the landmark with a raised bat. Not far from him on the field were the only other two men to have achieved the milestone, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

    Ponting is the first Australian to reach the milestone and has moved well past the next of his countrymen on the list – Allan Border is second with 11, 174. At the time of reaching 13,000 runs Ponting's score was 81, at which point he was 262 runs behind Dravid on the all-time list. Tendulkar sits at the top with 15,432.

    It has been a memorable series for Ponting, who came into the contest with his place in the Australian team under scrutiny. After two crucial fifties in the Boxing Day Test, he scored his first century for near two years in the Sydney Test.

    At 37, Ponting has shown that he has much to offer Australian cricket.
