Colombo: The former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has dismissed the allegations against him by a Sri Lankan publication that he chose to announce his T20I retirement to an Indian newspaper because it was more 'financially rewarding'.
According to Sri Lanka's Daily Mirror daily, Jayawardene chose not to divulge the details during an interview few days before his retirement announcement.
The newspaper also further alleged that Jayawardene chose an Indian publication for the announcement as it would have been more financially rewarding option for him.
Jayawardene has refuted the claims by saying that he did speak to the newspaper but the time was not right to make things public and moreover he had no obligation towards the newspaper.
The veteran batsman also added that he intended his T20I retirement to be an informal one and clarified he didn't receive any 'reward' for the announcement from any party whatsoever.
Jayawardene is currently in Bangladesh with the Sri Lankan team taking part in the ICC World T20.
