Dhaka: The Bangladesh selectors have included uncapped offspinner Shohag Gazi in the squad for the first Test against West Indies in Mirpur starting November 13. The 14-man squad named on Thursday also saw medium-pacer Abul Hasan, who has played four Twenty20 internationals, earn his maiden Test call-up.
Gazi, 21, has been called up after an impressive run in the ongoing National Cricket League in which he has taken 11 wickets in two matches, including a hat-trick, as well as scored a century for Barisal. In 18 first-class matches he has a career tally of 87 wickets at 24. Hasan, 20, represents Sylhet at the domestic level and has taken eight wickets at 43.37 from six first-class matches.
Fast bowler Rubel Hossain, who last played international cricket December 2011, returned to the setup after recovering from a shoulder injury for which he undewent a surgery in South Africa earlier this year. The 22-year-old injured his shoulder while playing a Test against Pakistan in Chittagong last year, and only recently made a return to first-class cricket in the NCL.
The team will be led by wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim. Allrounder Mahmudullah was named vice-captain. The experienced batsman Mohammad Ashraful was left out after his form took a major downturn in this season's NCL and replaced by Naeem Islam. The experienced left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak continued to left out of the Test set-up.
The series against West Indies includes two Tests, five ODIs and one Twenty20 international. The second Test is in Khulna from November 21-25.
