Virender Sehwag to lead Delhi Ranji team

DDCA has named Sehwag the captain of the squad, while Gambhir will be his deputy.

The trio of Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli has been named in Delhi's 35-member list of probables for the 2012-13 Ranji Trophy season, announced here on Friday evening.

According to a report in Deccan Herald, DDCA has named Sehwag the captain of the squad, while Gambhir will be his deputy.

Delhi will play Uttar Pradesh in their season opener, scheduled to begin on November 2. Both Sehwag and Gambhir, along with Kohli, didn't play any of the matches in Delhi's campaign last season. Mithun Manhas led the side in the absence of Sehwag and other big guns.

The move has been seen as an effort by the trio to get some match practice before India take on England in the first of the four Tests in Ahmedabad on November 15. The pressure has been growing on Sehwag and Gambhir, who haven’t been in the best of form for the last few years, to either perform or make way for the youngsters.

It’s been 30 innings since Sehwag has hit a century. His last three-figure score came against New Zealand in Ahmedabad in 2010. Gambhir’s dry run with the bat has stretched much more than Sehwag’s. It’s been 40 innings that Gambhir hasn’t scored a century; his last hundred had come in January 2010 against Bangladesh.

Delhi are in Group B of the Ranji Trophy, along with Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Baroda and Odisha.
