Woakes replaces Bresnan in England Test

Samit Patel has been dropped from the 15-man squad to face New Zealand next month.

London: Warwickshire fast bowler Chris Woakes has earned his maiden call-up to England’s Test team as the selectors chose to assess Tim Bresnan’s elbow for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. Dropped from the 15-man squad named by the England selectors on Thursday was allrounder Samit Patel, who failed to impress during the 2-1 series win over India late last year.

Woakes, 23, has played seven ODIs and three Twenty20 internationals and boasts a first-class batting average of 38.25 and bowling average of 25.56. Bresnan struggled during the Tests in India and in the current one-day series has not made much of an impact with the ball, and a worrisome elbow will be monitored for further treatment.

"We have a busy international summer ahead of us and the medical team felt this was an ideal opportunity for Tim Bresnan to take some time out to ensure his elbow is functioning effectively," said Geoff Miller, the England national selector, when announcing the touring squads. "Chris Woakes has impressed on the England Performance Programme and with England Lions and Warwickshire in recent years as well as with England in the limited overs formats. This is a good opportunity for him to gain further experience in the international environment."

For the one-day leg of the New Zealand tour, the England selectors have axed wicketkeeper-batsman Craig Kieswetter while naming Joe Root, James Harris and Woakes. Kieswetter managed just 42 runs in three ODIs before being dropped for the fourth match in Mohali on Wednesday, which India won by five wickets to claim the series. Root scored his maiden ODI fifty in that match. Harris, an uncapped 22-year-old fast bowler and lower-order batsman who plays for Middlesex, was part of England's Twenty20 squad during the tour of India.

England play two Twenty20s, three ODIs and three Tests in New Zealand. The tour starts with the first Twenty20 in Auckland on February 9.
