Sylhet: Stephan Myburgh smashed a half-century and medium fast bowler Ahsan Malik grabbed 3 for 16 in the Netherlands' convincing six-wicket win over United Arab Emirates in a World Twenty20 Group B match.
Myburgh blazed seven fours and two sixes in his 55 off 36 balls as the Netherlands eased to 152 for 4 with seven balls to spare after Malik's three late strikes had bowled out UAE for 151 in 19.5 overs.
The Netherlands joined Ireland at the top of Group B after the Irishmen stunned Zimbabwe by three wickets. Top team from the group will join South Africa, Sri Lanka, England and New Zealand in Group 2 of the main round.
Shaiman Anwar top scored with 32 for UAE - playing in the ICC tournament after 18 years - as none of the middle-order batsmen could capitalize on steady starts. Captain Khurram Khan scored 31 with four boundaries before he was bowled by Cooper.
The Netherlands took some smart catches and were brilliant in the outfield as Cooper ran out Shadeep Silva off a direct throw from the deep.
Myburgh and Michael Swart set the tone with a rollicking start of 69 runs off 40 balls with Cooper remaining unbeaten on 34 off 26 balls.
"We did struggle in manageable chases in warm-ups, and we wanted to get over this one," captain Peter Borren said after the Netherlands had lost both their warm-up matches.
"Myburgh set things up brilliantly and Tom Cooper was superb, I would have settled for chasing 165 for 170 and I think we dragged them back well."
