Spinner Bruce Martin got into the act removing Ian Bell and Joe Root in quick succession just before lunch to peg back the England charge.
Kevin Pietersen was not at his fluent best but scored a patient fifty of 112 balls and went on to make 73 runs before Bruce Martin dismissed him in the 126th over. KP and Matt Prior compiled a 41-run stand in quick time.
New Zealand were off to a perfect start as Trent Boult picked up the wicket of centurion Jonathan Trott in the second over of the day as he prodded forward to an away going delivery edging the ball to wicketkeeper BJ Watling. Trott scored 121 off 235 balls.
Matt Prior scored 82 off 139 balls to propel England to a first innings total of 465.
