New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of Rubina Suleiman Memon, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment by the special TADA court in Mumbai for conspiracy and abetment in connection with the 1993 serial blasts case in the city.
Rubina Memon is the sister-in-law of absconding accused Tiger Memon.
The SC also dismissed the bail applications of Zamir Sayed Ismail Kadri, Sardar Shahwali Khan and Muzamil Umar Kadri but granted bail to five convicts - Khalil Ahmed Sayed Ali Nazir, Shahnawaz Hajwani, Mujib Sharif Parkar, ex-custom officer Sudhanwa Sadashiv Talavdekar and Ehsan Mohammad Tufel Qureshi.
Khalil Ahmed Sayed Ali Nazir has already undergone eight years of imprisonment out of 10 years awarded to him.
A ntoice was also issued the Central bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the SC on the application of four others including an ex-custom officer Sudhanwa Sadashiv Talavdekar seeking suspension of their sentences and release on bail during pendency of their appeal.
Hearing the bail plea of the Memon family members and other convicts, the apex court also directed setting up of a medical board to assess the mental condition of Yusuf Memon.
Yusuf, too has been sentenced to life in the case. The court will hear the matter now on February 22.
Yusuf, younger brother of Tiger Memon, had filed an application in the court, saying he is not mentally fit.
The special TADA court in Mumbai had convicted Rubina for allowing the use of a Maruti van, registered in her name, by other convicts, who had delivered the explosives, while Yusuf was convicted for allowing his flat to be used for hatching the conspiracy.
Yusuf is reportedly suffering from some neurological problem.
The top court had earlier granted bail to Yusuf's brother Essa Memon, who was also undergoing life imprisonment. The court had granted his plea that he had already spent a prolonged period of 13 years in jail as an undertrial as well as a convict.
Essa Memon then went on to challenging the sentence awarded to him. The TADA court had convicted 100 persons for their involvement in the serial blasts, which had killed 257 people and injured or maimed 574 others in 1993.
