New Delhi: Nancy Pelosi made history on Thursday when she was sworn in as the first woman speaker of the House. Republican leader John Boehner handed her the speaker's gavel.
As she took the reigns of the House, Pelosi, the most politically powerful woman in US politics, said, "For our daughters and granddaughters, today we have broken the marble ceiling. For women in America, the sky is the limit."
She added that "it is a moment for which we have waited more than 200 years. Never losing faith, we waited through the many years of struggle to achieve our rights."
Pelosi was surrounded by her kids while she thanked her husband for giving her the courage to pursue a career in politics.
The Democrats, who have taken the gavels in the Senate and House for the first time in 12 years, pledged a new era in Congress and a new effort at bipartisan progress.
