Dhaka: The army-led joint forces in Bangladesh have arrested nearly two lakh people as part of a massive anti-crime and anti-graft campaign since the proclamation of emergency on January 11 this year, a media report said on Monday.

The New Age newspaper, quoting statistics given by the police headquarters, said 191,967 people were arrested till May 20 and of them, 87,542 have been picked up on suspicion.

1,560 illegal firearms and 1,286 bombs were also seized during the period.

The forces intensified their drive as per the directive of the chief adviser of the military-backed interim government Fakhruddin Ahmed, in his first meeting with the secretaries on January 23.

According to crime watchdogs, despite the security campaign the country recently witnessed a sharp rise in the incidents of extortion, robbery and abduction although the incidents of killing and acid throwing came down marginally in the past several months.

Home Secretary Abdul Karim at a meeting with senior police officials last week directed the law enforcement agencies to intensify the anti-crime campaign in view of the growing incidents of ordinary crimes.

According to media reports, the jails, long been overcrowded with prisoners, were facing fresh troubles with an increase in number of detainees.

The New Age said the south-western Khulna jail, faced with space crunch in the women's ward, shifted 15 women prisoners to the neighbouring Satkhira district jail on Sunday as the prison had women inmates seven times the capacity in the women's ward.
