'93 blasts: Big fish yet to know fate

Mumbai: The explosion at the Bombay Stock Exchange, the first of a series that rocked Mumbai on March 12, 1993, marked the loss of innocence for Mumbai and her citizens.
Fourteen years later, the Special TADA Court is deciding the fate of the perpetrators of the mindless carnage.
Hundred people out if the 123 accused have been convicted and 73 have been handed out sentences varying between three years and life imprisonment. But the big fish yet to be sentenced include:
- Four members of the Memon family including Yakub, Yusuf, Essa and Rubeena all of whom were found guilty of conspiracy and aiding, and abetting terrorist activity.
- The bomb planters Mohammed Shoib Ghansar who were found guilty of planting an RDX laden scooter at Zaveeri Bazar that killed 17 persons and injured 57.
- Asgar Mukadam who parked the van at Plaza Theatre at Dadar that killed 10 and injured 37 people.
- Abdul Ghani Ismail Turk who drove a jeep full of RDX to Century Bazar in Worli that exploded, killing 113 and injuring 227 others.
Also in the dock are men including Bashir Ahmed, Firoz Malik, Moin Qureshi and Salim Rahim Shaikh, who threw hand grenades in the Mahim Fisherman's Colony killing three people.
And yet to be sentenced is actor Sanjay Dutt who was convicted for possession of prohibited weapons in a notified area.
The court is expected to resume handing out sentences to Zaibunissa Quadri and Rubeena Memon.
