Srinagar: A 40-year-old man died of a heart attack while on his way to the Amarnath shrine, said officials.
Vikria Parveenbhai, a resident of Rajkote in Gujarat, died of cardiac arrest while climbing up the 3,880-metre high cave shrine on Thursday morning. Officials denied reports that Vikria had died of a heart attack.
The death of the pilgrim has raised the number of devotees who passed away during the ongoing yatra to four. A volunteer working in a community kitchen died at Brarimarg on Monday. Two pilgrims died en route to the cave at Brarimarg and Baltal base camps on Tuesday and Wednesday.
A record number of 36,433 pilgrims offered their prayers at the holy cave yesterday - the day the yatra officially commenced, sources said adding that this was the highest number of devotees who visited the shrine on a single day.
