Etawah (Uttar Pradesh): In Mulayam Singh Yadav's stronghold of Etawah, the legend himself seems to have descended to contest for Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP).
Like the Dalit messiah, this Ambedkar too is a law graduate from Allahabad university, but that's where the similarity ends.
One is a legend the other wants to use the name for his own glory, one changed the face of Dalit politics and the other Ambedkar is just starting out as a BSP candidate from Lakhna in Itawah.
"His name sure does help. His whole life was dedicated to the people of the lowest segment of the society," says BSP candidate from Lakhna, Bhim Rao Ambedkar.
Dr Ambedkar had problems getting elected to Parliament. And if Bhim Rao of Lakhana wins, he would be the first BR Ambedkar to get directly elected to a legislative body in free India.
Dr Ambedkar ended up losing two Lok Sabha elections. However, that did not dissuade the father of Lakhna's Ambedkar to name his son after Baba Saheb and that too, when the Congress was the sole claimant to the Dalit vote.
"A Buddhist monk used to come to our house and I was impressed by his teachings. Also, being a school teacher, I wanted my son to be like Ambedkar," says Ambedkar's father, Somaran Singh.
But unlike the iconic Ambedkar, for the moment this Ambedkar has his eyes set on just putting up a good electoral performance.
