New Delhi: World Champion Viswanathan Anand came up with an impressive performance to hold Russian Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik to a draw in the opening round of the World Chess Championship at Bonn in Germany on Tuesday.

Anand, who started his World Championship campaign with black pieces against Kramnik, settled for an easy draw after 32 moves.

In the past many world championships, such approaches have been common to gauge what the opponent has prepared and in all likelihood, Kramnik will show his prepared ammunition against the Slav defence, the preferred choice of Anand.

It was a well-rehearsed opening theory in the Queen's Gambit Slav, Exchange variation. Something that gives the white player a surely level position with some chances in case black makes a mistake. P

The Championship will be played over 12 classical games and in the event of a tie, rapid and blitz games will decide the winner.

It carries a total prize 1.5 million Euro which will be equally split between the players, regardless of the winner.
